Skarmory is used as an early-game attacker, being able to deal 50 damage with 1 Energy if it has a Pokemon Tool attached. If the player starts with Onix, they may use Lyra to bench it without having to worry about the hefty Retreat Cost.
Brock is used to accelerate Energy for Onix so it sets up faster before evolving. Steelix can then be switched in to use Heavy Impact once it is ready.

Steelix can take a lot of time to properly set up. It is best to start with a fast and Energy-efficient attacker while Steelix sets up on the Bench.

Brock has the ability to accelerate Onix's Energy. This makes it faster to fulfill Steelix's Attack Cost.

Steelix may not be able to deal enough damage to OHKO bulky Pokemon. It is ideal to increase its survivability with Trainer Cards.
You may use Jasmine or Steel Apron to reduce the damage it takes.

Steelix has a very high Attack and Retreat Cost. You may use cards such as Team Rocket Grunt or Guzzlord ex to remove its Energy and prevent it from attacking or retreating.

Cards that boost your Pokemon's damage can help you manage the damage reduction of Steelix decks. These may help you land vital KOs quicker.

Steelix relies on Trainer Cards to improve its survivability and accelerate its Energy. You may use Pokemon such as Gengar ex that have moves or abilities that can prevent your opponent from using Supporter Cards.
You may also use Silver, who can shuffle one of the opponent's Supporter Cards back into their deck. Guzma can also be used to remove Pokemon Tools.

You may also opt to shuffle the opponent's hand back into their deck. This can prevent them from having the necessary Trainer Cards to support Steelix.
