Stage 2 cards are evolutions of Stage 1 Pokemon and the final forms of some Basic Pokemon.
These cards have higher HP compared to their Basic and Stage 1 forms, and have access to strong attacks and Abilities which can be pivotal to some strategies.
Generally, and much like in the video games, you will not be able to evolve a Basic Pokemon directly to its Stage 2 card, as you first need to evolve it to its Stage 1 form.
This is why Stage 1 cards can play an important role in some strategies as you need to keep the Basic Pokemon alive and healthy with higher HP during play before you can reap the benefits of using a Stage 2 card during a match.
Stage 3 cards, with the exception of ex cards and those with special illustrations, have a three-diamond rarity. You may get them next to Stage 1 cards when opening booster packs, but much less frequently.
Most Stage 2 cards have high Energy costs for their attacks and Retreat Costs, as playing them during a match are pretty much big choices on whether you want to use or bench them during play.
Select Stage 2 Pokemon cards have alternate card versions with full art illustrations and designs, which are relatively hard to get as they are rare pulls from booster packs.
These cards still play the same way as their regular card versions, and have no advantages in battles.
