Gyarados ex and Vaporeon Deck Core Combos and Interactions

Description
・Use Leaf to reduce Retreat Cost and retreat Pokemon to Bench
・Use Vaporeon to transfer energy from Bench Pokemon to Gyarados ex.

Best Starting Hand

Best Starting Hand

Starting with Magikarp is not always bad. Attach an Energy and use Leap Out to get it out of the Active Spot. This allows you to safely move Magikarp to the Bench while also attaching an Energy to it for the turn while you send out a different Active Pokemon.

Other Good Starting Cards

Recommended Starting Hand

A turn 2 Gyarados ex is also strong, but that would mean Magikarp would need to survive a turn. Use Poke Ball to find a Benched Pokemon so that you don't get donked, and use Misty only when Gyarados ex is in play, that way you don't end up losing Energy if Magikarp is KOd.

Strategy 1: T1 Misty

T1 Misty

A successful T1 Misty can often spell victory for Articuno ex decks, creating an advantage that's difficult to catch up to. Use Misty and turn attachments to power up Articuno ex as quick as possible.

Best Misty Decks

Vaporeon's Wash Out

Vaporeon and Leaf can be used in tandem to be more efficient with your attached Energy and also for paying for Gyarados ex's high energy cost.

Use Leaf to reduce the Retreat Cost of your active pokemon and bring them to the Bench. Afterwards, you can use Vaporeon's Wash Out Ability to take the energy of your Benched Pokemon and transfer them to Gyarados ex.

Gyarados ex Offense

Gyarados ex - Rampaging Whirlpool

Gyarados ex's Rampaging Whirlpool can randomly discard energy from any pokemon. This move can be very advantageous if it could discard energy from your opponent's pokemon, but keep in mind that it can also take energy from your own pokemon.

Game Phases

Early Game

Key Card(s) Required
Step Description
1 Place Articuno ex in the Active Spot while building your pokemon in bench.
2 Use Misty to generate additional energy for Articuno ex if needed.

1 Evolve Magikarp into Gyarados ex while Benched.
2 Evolve Eevee into Vaporeon while Benched.
3 Focus on building Gyarados ex using your additional Energy attachments.

Late Game

Key Card(s) Required
Step Description
1 Use Leaf to reduce the cost of Articuno ex's Retreat Cost.
2 Retreat Articuno ex and send Gyarados ex out into the Active Spot.
3 Use Vaporeon's Wash Out to move Energy to Gyarados ex so that it can meet its expensive Attack cost.

Gyarados ex and Vaporeon Deck Best and Worst Matchups

Best Matchups

Deck Commentary

Fire Decks
Type: Fire

・Water Decks naturally match up favorably against Fire decks.

Worst Matchups

Deck Commentary

Pikachu ex Decks
Type: Lightning

・ Pokemon in the deck are all weak to Lightning with the exception of Eevee.
・ Variants with Zebstrika and Mythical Island Electabuzz can pick off our Magikarp.

Overall Consistency

The deck may struggle in the early game but can win in the mid to late game thanks to Gyarados ex's damage, disruption, and survivability. While Misty can help mitigate the deck's early-game weakness, starting with Magikarp and its low HP can prove to be detrimental to the deck's success. Be sure to bench Magikarp only if you have Gyarados ex ready for the following turn.
