Main Pokemon | Disruption | Description |
---|---|---|
Gengar ex | Hypno |
・Gengar ex’ Ability, while it is on the Active Spot, restricts opponents from using Supporter cards. ・As Gengar ex needs several turns to be set up, use Hypno to make an opposing Pokemon fall asleep. |
Best Starting Hand |
---|
Having Gastly and Haunter in your starting hand can help a lot since it will take a few turns before you can fully utilize Gengar ex, which you can try to draw with Professor’s Research.
During your initial turns, you can place Gastly in the field and evolve it to Haunter, giving it more health and allowing you to deal some chip damage while only requiring one Energy. You can use Red Card to disrupt your opponent from setting up their Pokemon.
Alternatively, you can use Drowzee as your Active Pokemon and place Gastly and Haunter on the bench so you can safely set them up, provided that your opponent does not force them in with Sabrina.
Recommended Starting Hand |
---|
This alternative starting hand plays more defensively, as Drowzee will take the Active Spot as you place Gastly on the bench and spend the next turns drawing for Haunter and Gengar ex. If your Drowzee is knocked out, you can draw for another one with Poke Ball.
Similar to the previous starting hand, you can use Red Card to disrupt your opponent and Professor’s Research to look for Gengar ex.

Gastly-Haunter Frontline | ||
---|---|---|
If you are able to draw Gastly and Haunter during the initial turns of a match, you can immediately place them as your Active Pokemon and attack to deal chip damage. Evolving Gastly to Haunter gives it a bit more HP early on, and makes it ready to evolve into Gengar ex if you have it ready.
On your bench, you can set up Hypno which you can switch in to stall or inflict a status effect and another Gastly as a backup.
Hypno Stall | ||
---|---|---|
Alternatively, if you are not able to draw Gastly and Haunter in your first turns, you can place Drowzee as your Active Pokemon to receive damage and build Gastly on your bench.
Make sure to evolve Drowzee into Hypno and try to make the opposing Pokemon fall asleep with Hypno’s Ability to extend the time you can stall while building for Gengar ex.

Deck | Commentary |
---|---|
Machamp ex Decks |
・Weak to Psychic-type cards. ・Also needs time to be fully set up, which can be stalled by Hypno or Gengar ex if built early. |
Deck | Commentary |
---|---|
Control Decks |
Type: Any ・Sabrina or Red Card can easily counter this deck by shuffling your hand to your deck or forcing Haunter into the Active Spot. |
Darkness-type Decks |
・Psychic is weak to Darkness-type cards. ・Can easily knock out Gastly or Haunter. |
The Gengar ex Deck is heavily weighed down by the time required to set it up, as well as being fully dependent on Gastly and Haunter which are mediocre when it comes to offense and defense.
However, if you are able to set up Gengar ex early, you can easily deal a lot of damage without worrying about your opponent using Supporter cards, specifically Sabrina and Professor’s Research, which can disrupt their strategies.
Card | Explanation |
---|---|
Gengar |
・ Can stand in place of Gengar ex. Lesser version of the ex card as you will deal less damage, but you can still block your opponent from using Supporter cards. |
Card | Possible Cuts |
---|---|
Haunter |
・ Promo Haunter has a useful attack, Surprise Attack that can deal a sizeable 50 for a lucky heads flip. |
Pidgeot |
・ Pidgey line can replace Drowzee, Hypno, and Sabrina. ・ Allows you to switch up your opponent’s Active Pokemon with Pidgeot, which synergizes well with Gengar ex’ Ability. ・ Can be more complicated to set up, as you are now aiming to build two Stage 2 Pokemon. |

If you don't have another Gengar ex, you can substitute a regular Gengar card which can still restrict your opponent from using Supporter cards, although you will deal less damage than the ex counterpart.
You can also only add one copy of Hypno and Sabrina in this deck and add a Potion to help sustain Gastly and Haunter while they are in the field.
