Articuno Deck Core Combos and Interactions

Primary Attacker Best Turn 1 Supporter Description
Pokemon TCG Pocket - A1 083 ArticunoArticuno Pokemon TCG Pocket - A1 220 MistyMisty ・Articuno can start attacking right away with a successful Misty flip.
・Remember that you can Attack on T1 if you have enough Energy.

Best Starting Hand

Best Starting Hand

You would always want to have Misty in your opening hand. A successful heads flip can decide your victory, creating an advantage that most opponents can't catch up to.

Other Good Starting Cards

Recommended Starting Hand

A T1 Misty to a T2 Sabrina is great for keeping the offensive pressure on opponents. Use Poke Ball to get your second Articuno ready and Potion to keep your active Articuno healthy.

Strategy 1: T1 Misty

T1 Misty

A successful T1 Misty can often mean that you can gain an advantage with Articuno, and hopefully create an advantage that's difficult to catch up to. Use Misty and turn attachments to power up Articuno as quick as possible.

Best Misty Decks

Strategy 2: Red Card

Use Red Card if your opponent has already exhausted one of their two Professor's Research. Red Card is also especially useful against decks with multiple evolution lines. This can shuffle back evolution cards into their deck, delaying them for multiple turns.

A well-placed Red Card can keep an opponent from mounting offense.

Game Phases

Early Game

Key Card(s) Required
Step Description
1 A Misty start is what you always want with this deck. Always go for this turn 1 play and attempt to donk your opponent before they can evolve their Pokemon.
2 Send a Fossil out into the Active Spot if Articuno isn't ready. This works as a Basic Pokemon that can be discarded instead of retreating, making it a useful tool for buying us a valuable turn. Do note that knocking out a Fossil scores a point.

Mid-Game

Key Card(s) Required
Step Description
1 Use Sabrina to draw out unprepared Pokemon from your opponent's Bench. This is great for knocking out unevolved support Pokemon like Ralts, or damaging Pokemon that may become problems once evolved like Charmander or Bulbasaur.

Late Game

Key Card(s) Required
1 Use Giovanni to boost your damage by 10 when necessary, and get your 2HKOs whenever you can. Use Red Card to disrupt your opponent's set up, and deny them from return KOs.

Articuno Deck Best and Worst Matchups

Best Matchups

Deck Commentary

Charizard ex Decks
Type: Fire

・Water Decks naturally match up favorably against Fire decks.
・Your opponent will have to repeatedly flip tails on Moltres ex's Inferno Dance.

Worst Matchups

Deck Commentary

Pikachu ex Decks
Type: Lightning

・ Articunos in the deck are all weak to Lightning.
・ Difficult counterplay to disadvantageous damage trades.

Overall Consistency

The variant with Articuno ex instead of just Articuno is vastly superior to this list, as Articuno ex is a superior Pokemon to its non-ex counterpart. It has the advantage of being able to attack with two Energy, and no reliance on having a third gives it an edge over this list.

It is also capable of much more damage than Articuno and is not reliant on lucky paralysis flips. Overall, this deck is mediocre at best and should only be considered if you're up for a challenge.

Articuno Deck Card Substitutes

Card Explanation

Golduck
・A Golduck line would give the deck a more Energy-efficient attacker.
・Psyduck is also a decent start, as Headache can prevent the opponent from using Supporters on their turn.

Card Possible Cuts

Frosmoth

・ Consider running Frosmoth lines for more disruption. It will also need multiple Energy attachments, however, and lucky Misty flips.

This deck utilizes Frosmoth's Powder Snow to disrupt opponents with Sleep while an Articuno safely sets up on the Bench. Turn 1 Misty to Articuno ex plays are still available to this deck, but this deck list gives the player defensive options through Frosmoth's Powder Snow.
