In addition to benefiting from the +30 damage from Sophocles, Vikavolt can also prevent the opponent from using Item cards from their hand with its Ability. In the current meta, with the popularity of two-stage Pokemon and decks using Rare Candy is on the rise, so being able to slow your opponent's strategy down is a major strength of this deck.

Sophocles can increase the damage dealt of Vikavolt and Togedemaru by 30. Both require 2 or less energy, so by using Sophocles you can rack up damage early.

The effect of Vikavolt's Disconnect is to prevent the opponent from using items during their next turn. In the current meta, there are many Stage 2 decks that use Rare Candy, so Vikavolt can serve as a powerful floodgate.

The Fighting weakness can make it annoying to get up to Vikavolt if it gets placed in your Active Spot. Genetic Apex Hitmonlee with Cyrus can drag Grubbin onto the Active Spot which can quickly ruin your strategy.

With the introduction of Rare Candy, Gengar ex has found some use as an occasional rogue deck. If you have pretty bad draws, Gengar ex can quickly get out of hand and lock you out of your Sophocles and Professor's Research
