Early Game Tank | Main Attacker | Description |
---|---|---|
Onix | Golem |
・Onix buys time for Golem to set up. ・Golem can deal high damage using Double-Edge. |
Best Starting Hand |
---|
Having Onix and all of Golem's evolution line makes setting up a lot faster, so you can start dealing some damage as early as possible. Use Brock to ramp up Golem.
Recommended Starting Hand |
---|
As long as you have Onix and at least Geodude in your starting hand, you can still set up fairly quickly. Professor's Research can speed things up should you manage to obtain Graveler and/or Golem with it.
Sabrina allows you to prevent your Active Pokemon from facing an unfavorable matchup. Use Brock to ramp up Golem.

1 | At this point, you should have Golem ready. |
2 | Use Brock to give Golem the single Fighting Energy it needs to use Double-Edge and KO your opponent's Active Pokemon. |
Key Card(s) Required | |

1 | Use Potion to heal up the HP Golem lost from using Double-Edge when needed, or use Sabrina to prevent Golem from facing an unfavorable matchup. |
Deck | Commentary |
---|---|
Nidoking/Nidoqueen Decks |
・Nidoking and/or Nidoqueen can get KOed instantly by Golem's Double-Edge. ・They also take an additional 20 damage from Fighting-type Pokemon, allowing Golem's Double-Edge to deal a total of 170 damage, which already surpasses their max HP. |
Deck | Commentary |
---|---|
Venusaur ex Decks |
・Golem can't OHKO Venusaur ex with Double-Edge. ・Venusaur ex can deal a decent amount of damage to Golem while also heal 30 damage each time it uses Giant Bloom. ・Fighting-type Pokemon are more vulnerable against Grass-type Pokemon. |
Although it takes some time to set up Golem, you can certainly deal consistent damage once Golem is up. However, the downside is that Golem needs to be able to get a OHKO each time it attacks to quickly end the game since it also takes 50 damage per attack.
Moreover, since Golem is a Stage 2 Pokemon, the opponent can use Red Card to alter your setup.
Card | Explanation |
---|---|
Hitmonchan |
・Hitmonchan is a Basic 1-Energy Pokemon that can provide some early damage for the deck. |
Hitmonlee |
・Hitmonlee is also a Basic 1-Energy Pokemon that can provide some early damage with the ability to snipe vulnerable Pokemon on your opponent's bench. |
Card | Possible Cuts |
---|---|
Giovanni |
・ Exchanging X Speed for Giovanni can make Golem's Double-Edge more powerful, which can be useful against Pokemon that have more than 150 HP. |

Dugtrio can function similarly as Onix in that it can buy you time to set up Golem. Although Onix has better HP and is a Basic Pokemon, Dugtrio can attack constantly with just one energy.
Moreover, when getting heads from a coin flip, it can prevent all damage from - and effects of - attacks done to Dugtrio thanks to Dig's effect.
