How to Beat Nessa

Raise a Grass-type Pokemon up to Level 25

Nessa, the Gym Leader of Hulbury Gym, uses Water-type Pokemon as well as a mixed Water/Rock-type Pokemon, Drednaw. Having at least one Grass-type move, which are 4x Super Effective against Water/Rock types, will help take out Drednaw easily. As Nessa's strongest Pokemon, Drednaw, is at Level 24, it's a good idea to ensure your Grass-type is around the same level when heading into the battle.

Find an Eldegoss on Route 5

Route 5 Eldegoss.jpeg
Eldegoss can be found floating around on the bridge on Route 5. If you didn't pick Grookey as your starter, it's recommend to pick up an Eldegoss here to handle Nessa. Its level is already high on encountering it, and as it already knows Razor Leaf, it will earn its keep in your party right from the get-go.

Hold your Dynamax for Drednaw

Since Nessa will save her Dynamax for her final Pokemon, Drednaw, it's recommended that you to do so as well. Don't let Drednaw catch you off guard with its powerful attacks.

Have a Pokemon who can bear the brunt of Drednaw's attacks

If your Pokemon's levels are low coming in to the fight, put in a Pokemon who can withstand Drednaw's Dynamax attacks. If one of your Pokemon can withstand 3 attacks from Drednaw's Dynamax form, it will return to its normal form and become easier to handle for the rest of the battle.
