Items

By increasing Sp. Def 1.5x more with the Assault Vest, and throwing EVs to Sp. Def, Lanturn can weather Special moves from the type-effective Togekiss and Hydreigon.

Focus Sash is also recommended to boost Sp. Atk. You can then use 1.5x more powerful Special moves against a Corviknight using Roost, or against Ground-type Pokemon like Hippowdon.

Alternate Move Choices

Ice Beam Can replace Dazzling Beam. Also effective against Grass-types.
Thunderbolt A high-powered sure hit, though less likely to paralyze than Discharge.
Hydro Pump Effective against Ground-types. Use when you need more power, but beware of its low accuracy.
Thunder High power but low accuracy. Perfect when raining due to Max Geyser.

How to Use Lanturn Effectively

Embrace Electric-type attacks

Lanturn will not receive damage, and will instead recover HP from Electric-type moves due to its Ability, Volt Absorb. It is easy to counter Electric-type Pokemon with Lanturn.

For example, you can cancel out damage from a Rotom's Volt Switch, or a Dracozolt with a Choice Scarf.

Cycle Pokemon with Volt Switch

With Lanturn, you can switch it out while cutting the opponent's HP with its move Volt Switch. Hence, it is possible to turn a situation to your team's advantage, with the next Pokemon receiving the effect of Focus Sash. This technique is called a cycle.

Counters for Lanturn

Nullify Its Water and Electric Attacks

We strongly recommend using Ground-type Pokemon because they are basically untouchable against Lanturn. With the Ability Storm Drain or Water Absorb, Water-type moves are nullified. Ground-type Pokemon are also immune to Electric attacks like Lanturn's Volt Switch.

Wall It with a Special Defender

Pokemon with high Sp. Def are strongly effective against Lanturn. You can battle with almost little to no damage intake with Snorlax, who has high Sp. Def, or Ferrothorn for high Sp. Def and type advantage.
