Competitive Analysis

Retaliate gets its use only after sending out its user in battle due to the previous Pokemon being knocked out. This move must be used immediately as the damage increase only happens if the ally fainted on the previous turn.

Normal-type Pokemon are more fit to use this move to take advantage of the 140 power plus additional damage from STAB.

Unfortunately, this move is only useful on very specific situations, so it is much better to use moves that can hit hard at any given time. Giga Impact is a good example.
