Dynasty Warriors: Origins waves of enemies are harder this time around because producer Tomohiko Sho told the team to “Go and kill the player.” Read on to find out more about these changes in the series’ latest entry!
Dynasty Warriors: Origins Enemies Are Tougher To Beat
Programmed To "Go And Kill The Player"
Dynasty Warriors: Origins kicks up the action gameplay up a notch with tougher and stronger enemies as directed by its producer, Tomohiko Sho, who gave his team a simple instruction: "This time, go and kill the player."
Producer Sho sat down with PlayStation.Blog for an interview, and he shared what happened behind the scenes as the game was being developed. The reason for the appearance of stronger opponents was to create a "sense of realism"; after all, it’s not only the player character that’s fighting for their life on the battlefield, the opponent soldiers and generals are too.
Despite the difficulty spike, Sho made sure not to make it a game that was unnecessarily difficult, instead providing satisfying challenges that players could feel proud of if they accomplished the feat. "Even if you're not that good at action games, if you learn them in order, you can play comfortably and feel a sense of success." He admitted that it was a big challenge to blend the "traditional sense of exhilaration" when beating up countless enemies that is representative of the "musou" genre that Dynasty Warriors is known for, and the realism of a war-torn battlefield.
Returning To Its "Origins"
One striking difference Origins has from its predecessors is the lack of the title numbering that Dynasty Warriors is conventionally known for. If it followed its traditional naming, Origins would have been simply named Dynasty Warriors 10. Because of this change, Dynasty Warriors: Origins is the first ever non-numbered title in the series’ history.
Additionally, the Origins part of the title gives emphasis to the fact that the game will only focus on the first half of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel, in contrast to all previous titles that presented the entire storyline. In a separate interview with TheGamer at the 2024 Tokyo Game Show, Sho explained that Origins will only show the story up until the Battle of Chibi, otherwise known as the Battle of the Red Cliffs. "We really wanted to be thorough and intense in telling this story; it’s one of the epic points, so we’re only focusing on up until that point."
Dynasty Warriors: Origins is the newest main installment in the Dynasty Warriors franchise after seven years, and the series is based on the Chinese novel, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which details the events that took place in Han Dynasty-era China using both fiction and non-fiction elements. Origins features an original protagonist, the Nameless Hero, on his journey through the vast land of China where different factions compete for supremacy.
Released last January 17th, Dynasty Warriors: Origins is now available to play on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
