There is very well a chance he might come back, especially after the Lord of the knight made a deal with the sibling with one "condition" which may include Capitano lol, hes also not dead. Just half half, I still have hope for him. Not to mention that he literally follows every rule that playable characters have. Like, not being an npc but marked as a playable character in the files, having a signature weapon, passing the albedo test and especially having a weapon slot and running animations
clearly, you don't know mihoyo enough to know that they are able to bring him back, through whatever way or stretch. they'd benefit too much from his banner to just let him stay as an NPC. all they care about is money, not lore lol

Capitano has playable files in his datamine. He will be back. My guess Snezhnaya. The Fatui need the leylines and Capitano got it for them too
Capitano also responsible for supporting Liyue on exploring the Chasm. This is based on the world quests that related to the 9th battalion. You can clearly see that those Fatui troops are different from the typical Fatui we normally encounter.

Cap sure be playble. Not as him but as his soul or clone made by other fatui. And he isn't dead, he is sleeping.
capitano is not dead proof from 5.3. mavuika has a voice line about him as well

Do you remember Guthred 'memory' in AQ 5.3? His 'memory' from Natlan's legend become sentient, while his personality from it 'memory' are different from his real personality. . Maybe they can make Thrain 'alive' again from this method. It also not breaking his sacrifice plot (basically his 'alive' version isn't an original Thrain). About his original memories?? Just extract them from Night Kingdom leylines..
Captain is a very loved character, so he is very likely to either revived or a clone of a young version of him made by the doctor.
Also for saving Mav's hate from some incels (she hated bcs Cap "died" LMAO)
Idc he's playable or not, but i think he would "alive" again for some plot. Bcz his background story are so short for a strongest Harbinger. . And idk, he'll stay as Cap or Thrain..
R.I.P cap (no im not crying) guys the leaks shows that he will be playable in 6.x dw
