What do I do
I think the main thing is that the game does not tell you that you need a Natlan character before attempting the boss for the first time. The game tells you that you have to do 'close range attacks' with the pop up text but doesn't tell you to you have to climb the towers to break the things on top. And of course a natlan character will work best

I am doing this Boss with Furina, Navia, Chiori and Xianyun.. I know they are all 5 stars, but it is mote than fun to know that some "niche" characters (as game8 described them) also get there uses. Don't be salty and just play, there are always solutions.. That is the reason this game is getting so much attention.. Not because it is a waifu collector.
I swear Genshin players these days. Anything that brings a different game mechanic always brings whiny complaints. Players just want to bam bam bam dead things. They might as well go and play Hello Kitty Island Adventures for f*ck's sake.
So having to wait under 20 seconds for the Accretion Mechanisms phase to pass when you don't have any characters to go up the Phlogiston Pillars is a bad boss design? I mean, just wait? Also, did you forget that you get Kachina for free? You have no excuse not to use her (even if you don't level her up). Just use her to climb up the pillar. What's so hard about that mate? Stop trying to make things harder for yourself than they actually are.
If you don't have any characters to climb the pillars, then just wait it out. It's not like you're on a clock or anything. Only when they put this boss in Spiral Abyss are you going to have to worry but so what? You're just going to miss out on some primogems if you can't beat the clock. Also, read Game8's guide. Although their build guides are questionable, they've got good walkthroughs and they explain that you don't need characters that can climb the pillars.
also you can get on the pillars easily with Xiyanun, Alhaitham and Keqing

Very bad boss design. It force you to use Natlan character that can climb on "non climable" objects or character that can jump high (Kazucha, Xiao). They should update it to allow any character to climb on those rocks.
Yeah, this boss sucks.
Since there exist only 2 characters capable of climbing the phlogiston pillars, this boss is incredibly unfair in it''s design. And any climbing characters have to deal with the annoying lock on mechanics that push you towards the boss when aiming or the tiny platform.
