How to Unlock Brilliant Failure
Dip into the Water at the You Hour in North Buddha Fort

To unlock the Encounter Brilliant Failure, head to the northernmost tip of Buddha Fort, in Sundara Land, where an unnamed village is. Go to the dock and dip into the water at the You hour to trigger the Encounter, then talk to Er Mengzi who is crying over a goose.
If the Encounter does not trigger despite the time being the You hour, you can try triggering the quest in sunny weather via Photo Mode.
Possible Fixes to Unlock the Quest
- Spend 1-2 Days Out Of the Buddha Fort Area
- Clear Your Encounter List
- Set the Weather to Sunny in Photo Mode
- Walk Away and Come Back Into The Quest Area
Spend 1-2 Days Out Of the Buddha Fort Area
You can try leaving the Buddha Fort area for a few days. Try leaving the Encounter alone for 1-2 real-life days before returning to try and trigger the quest. If that doesn't work either, you could try waiting for the weekly reset every Monday and making the attempt again.
Clear Your Encounter List
If the Encounter doesn't spawn try clearing your Encounter list. There is a limit to how many Encounters can spawn at a time, so clearing your list may help in unlocking the quest.
Set the Weather to Sunny in Photo Mode
You can make it sunny in the game's Photo Mode. Switch to Pro Mode, scroll to the Weather tab, and select Sunny from the options.
Walk Down the Road and Come Back Into The Quest Area
If after going to the quest area the quest doesn't spawn, try walking away from the quest's trigger location and walking back to it until it finally triggers.
Brilliant Failure Walkthrough

| 1 |  Talk to Er Mengzi and hear him out on his woes about the death of his goose. He will explain that an inventor, Elder Yang, accidentally killed his goose by fitting it with a prosthetic, causing it to drown in the water. |
| 2 |  Er Mengzi will direct you to Elder Yang's location. On the way, talk to the Veteran Hero about his mishap with Elder Yang's invention. |
| 3 |  Continue on your way to Elder Yang's house. Elder Yang will assume you are there for an invention of his, so you have to explain everything to him in a Gift of Gab duel. |
| 4 |  After explaining everything to him, Elder Yang will invite you to come back on the next day. On the way out, you will be approached by his disciple Yang Ming, who will tell you that Elder Yang's latest invention is too dangerous for testing. |
| 5 |  Set the time to the Shen hour on the next day. Visit Elder Yang to see his invention, which is a musket. Despite being warned, he will test it anyway. An explosion will fling him into the sky. |
| 6 |  Find out where Elder Yang landed. He is lying near a tree and some bushes, not too far from his home. Approach him before calling for Yang Min. |
| 7 |  Listen to Elder Yang's monologue on his failures. Eventually, he will pass out. Talk to Yang Min to end the quest. |
