Yuan Jin'Gang is by far the best companion that you can summon during encounters, as he can interrupt bosses with his attacks, as well as dealing a good amount of Qi Damage.
He can perform his role consistently since he attacks from afar, provided that you lure the bosses away from his position and give him the space he needs to deal Qi damage to bosses such as Zheng E and Wolf Maiden.

Yuan Jin'Gang is one of the earliest companions you can unlock. You can use him as soon as you defeat him in a sparring session at the General's Shrine.

Elder Gongsun has the best interrupting capabilities, as well as dealing the most Qi damage out of all the companions. He's the companion that knocks down bosses the most often, giving you plenty of oppurtunities to get free hits in.
Unfortunately, he has low survivability and will take the boss's aggro if you're too far from the boss. He's best suited for quick encounters where you can attack alongside him against bosses, such as Heartseeker.

Defeat Elder Gongsun in a sparring session to unlock him as a companion. You can find him at the General's Shrine in the Verdant Wilds.
He's by far one of the hardest companions to unlock in the General Shrine area due to his complex moveset of fast and delayed strikes. Be prepared to repeat this fight multiple times!
Elder Gongsun Location and How to Beat

Dao Lord's value comes from his ability to summon a Giant Rat at will, despite his moderate damage and average QI break. This gives bosses an additional target, making them less likely to target you.
You can unlock the Dao Lord by defeating him in the Unbound Cavern campaign, which is part of the main quest in Kaifeng.

Du Qiaoxian's Light as a Swallow ability increases the damage you deal to a target. If you're looking for a support companion to increase your character's damage, Du Qiaoxian might be the best choice.

You can unlock Du Qiaoxian as a companion after beating her in a sparring duel in General's Shrine in the Verdant Wilds.

You can summon companions through the use of Assistance Signposts. These signposts are usually located just outside the boss lairs, before you encounter the boss.

Companions function as allies in battle and act independently. They can assist you by attacking or using their own abilities to help you gain the upper hand in combat. Each companion is suited for specific encounters, making them a great asset to have in combat.
You can summon companions by paying a flat coin fee, which varies depending on the companion. The cost varies, with some companions being more expensive than others.
They're very useful, especially for beginners who may need help with bosses.
Beginner's Guide
While allies are helpful, they aren't necessary. You can progress through the game normally on any difficulty without using companions. Their AI behavior is quite simple and may work against their intended purpose.
They are intended as substitutes for co-op partners and can be summoned when co-op partners are unavailable. However, they have the advantage of not disabling the Assist Deflection feature when summoned, unlike co-op partners.
