The worst law violation in Where Winds Meet is when you cause direct harm to others by attacking them (intentionally or not), and/or by killing them. The game takes harm seriously, that even harming geese will trigger a crime flag, especially when you're caught red-handed by others!

Another way to violate the law is by vandalizing, or by damaging the property of other NPCs. These items don't seem to be targetable, at first, but if you swing your weapon hard enough, they will break, and thus trigger a law violation flag! Damaging property is not as serious as harming others or committing murder, but vandalism can still tarnish your honor just as much.

You will become a wanted criminal only after a report is filed against you over the crime you committed, and you run away from the police when they're pursuing to arrest you. The pursuit is easy to escape from at first, but becomes progressively hard the more you commit crimes!

Another sure-fire way to become a wanted criminal is by constantly breaking the law, and by regularly escaping the police. And despite the honor interface becoming constantly “cleaned” after several times have passed, all the crimes you've committed are logged somewhere! Thus, being a repeat offender means an easier trip to the gallows!

If successfully caught by the Police, your first major offense will earn you a ticket to Jail, which you have to wait out for 15 minutes to fully serve your sentence.
On your second arrest for a major offense, you will be sent to a corrective facility where you have to work for entirety of your sentence, which roughly takes about 30 minutes to complete.

Alternatively, you can join the Pardon Parade, which downsizes your sentence to 10 minutes, at the cost of being showcased and stoned by everyone. Your character won't suffer any penalty during or after the parade, so it's really just 10 minutes of doing nothing in-game, however, make sure to properly atone for your sins!

The simplest and most guaranteed way to maintain your honor is by simply avoiding crimes. If you don't attack anyone, or destroy other people's properties, nobody will report you to the police, hence your honor will remain clean forever.

Atonement tasks are corrective actions performed by the player for minor offenses such as vandalism. A self-repair marker usually appears on the screen which players must actively interact with, to complete their atonement!
False accusations are falsified reports by NPCs for a crime that you didn't commit. These crimes are usually minor offenses, which means their corresponding punitive actions aren't as harsh as when you actually killed someone. These false accusations, however, still work as if you have truthfully committed the crime, hence you must resolve them by turning yourself in, or by performing atonement tasks.
