Where Winds Meet

Liu the Woodcutter: How to Befriend in AI Chat

Add to Watchlist

This is a guide on how to befriend Liu the Woodcutter in the AI Chat menu in Where Winds Meet. Persuade Liu the Woodcutter to change his ways and stop him from borrowing without returning, with a list of specific AI Chat prompts.

How to Befriend Liu the Woodcutter

Have a Long Conversation Regarding Liu's Ways

Befriending Liu the Woodcutter can be very difficult, as the conversation can drag for many minutes. One way you could befriend him is to have a long conversation with him, with you trying to convince that not all rich are bad people and that he may get captured by the authorities if he doesn't stop.

Roleplay that you two saw someone get arrested because they didn't pay their dues in time. If it doesn't work, try to scare them by telling them that his family might be targeted by the rich soon. This might cause his AI to hesitate in which you should follow up with a roleplay where Liu was able to pay all he borrowed.

Note that this method isn't a guarantee as his AI is very tricky and you can possibly take long before even convincing him to stop what's he's doing.

Example of Successful Conversation

Liu the Woodcutter.png (arms crossed, tone blunt) What business do you have here, Wanderer? I'm busy right now.
Where Winds Meet ProtagonistWhy do you seem angry, friend?
Liu the Woodcutter.png (sighs, eyes narrowing) I am not angry, just wary of those who pry into others' affairs. What do you want?
Where Winds Meet ProtagonistIt seems you are troubled friend. Can I help you with what is troubling with you?
Liu the Woodcutter.png (leans against a tree, gaze distant) Troubles come and go like the wind. There's nothing you can do about them. But if you insist on knowing, perhaps we could talk over a cup of tea.
Where Winds Meet Protagonistcome lets talk (you sit down)
Liu the Woodcutter.png (sits down hesitantly, expression guarded) Fine, let's talk. But remember, I'm not one to mince words. What's on your mind?
Where Winds Meet ProtagonistWhat are your thoughts about the rich?
Liu the Woodcutter.png (chuckles bitterly, eyes flashing) The rich? They live in their grand palaces while the poor toil day and night. They have more than they need, yet they hoard everything. I see no harm in taking a bit from them.
Where Winds Meet Protagonistand what about your belief in borrowing money?
Liu the Woodcutter.png (shrugs, tone dismissive) Borrowing? I call it lending. Things cannot speak, and if no one claims them, they might as well belong to me. Money was voluntarily lent, and voluntary things don't need to be returned.
Where Winds Meet Protagonist(you explain that if you borrow money, it's wrong if you dont return it to the person who let it get borrowed)
Liu the Woodcutter.png (frowns, jaw tightening) Wrong? By whose standards? If the rich have more than enough, what harm does it do to borrow a little? They'll never miss it. And if they don't notice, it's not my fault.
Where Winds Meet Protagonist(you explain that the rich can be both good and bad people, if he doesn't pay back what he is owed, he can be put to jail)
Liu the Woodcutter.png (eyes narrow, voice rising) Good and bad? That's a fine point, but not all rich are kind. As for jail, I've done nothing wrong. If something was left unclaimed, it's not theft. What law says I must return what no one asks for?
Where Winds Meet Protagonist(you explained that you saw someone get arrested when he didn't pay his dues. He was never seen again.)
Liu the Woodcutter.png (scoffs, crosses arms) Just stories to frighten people. If I'm careful, nothing will happen. Besides, the rich can afford to lose a bit. Why should I worry about jail when I'm just trying to survive?
Where Winds Meet Protagonist(you and liu saw a person just near your location get arrested by evading the rich in paying his dues)
Liu the Woodcutter.png (looks around nervously, shifts uneasily) Well, that's unfortunate. But I'm not like that man. I take only what I need, and from those who have plenty. Still, it's a reminder to be cautious.
Where Winds Meet Protagonist(You explain that even though he may be tough, the rich can also target his family if he doesn't pay.)
Liu the Woodcutter.png (glares, fists clenching) My family? They wouldn't dare touch them. But I see your point. Perhaps I should be more careful. Still, I've managed this far without trouble.
Where Winds Meet Protagonist(you explain that it's only a matter of time before they catch you.)
Liu the Woodcutter.png (sighs deeply, face darkening) You may be right. Maybe I've been too careless. But changing my ways won't be easy. I've done this for so long ...
Where Winds Meet Protagonist(after a month, Liu was able to pay off all his dues)
Liu the Woodcutter.png (scratching his head, tone subdued) Wanderer's words make sense. Maybe I was truly wrong. I'll reflect on it.

Liu the Woodcutter expresses gratitude and begins to ponder carefully.(Affection +100, becomes Revered)

Note that AI conversations can be unpredictable and even with the same inputs, the same result is not necessarily guaranteed.

How to Succeed in AI Chat

Reset Dialogue When Stuck

If your conversation has gone off the rails, or doesn't end no matter what you say, it's best to simply reset and start anew from a clean slate by clicking the button with a Refresh icon at the top of the chat box. Instead of trying several methods within one conversation, trying one strategy at a time and refreshing if it doesn't go anywhere is generally more effective.

Return to Login Screen if Combat Begins

Sometimes, NPCs will suddenly become violent during AI dialogues. When this happens, it's best to just bail out to the login screen; when you return, the NPC will be found just as they were before the conversation started.

If you accidentally kill a dialogue-capable NPC, our experience has shown that they will respawn, but this has not been heavily tested, so it's best to simply avoid engaging them in combat.

Double-Check the Hint

Even if the NPC appears to be happy with the result of your discussion, this won't always end the dialogue. Double-checking the text written in the hint will imply the win condition, so try strategies which will lead the dialogue towards that result.
