Resident Evil Requiem (RE9) DLC and Other Upcoming Updates
Story Expansion, Photo Mode, and More
Resident Evil Requiem (RE9) director Koshi Nakanishi has officially confirmed that this year’s hit survival horror title will receive a major DLC. As announced on the Resident Evil X (Twitter) account on March 10, Nakanishi stated that they are currently developing a story expansion that will delve deeper into the "world of Requiem."
In addition to the DLC announcement, the director also mentioned several features arriving for the game. This includes the highly requested Photo Mode and "another surprise coming around May," which Nakanishi noted is a mini-game.
Some fans online theorize that the mini-game could be "Mercenaries Mode," which is a fast-paced survival mini-game that challenges players to defeat as many enemies as possible within a time limit. Although nothing has been confirmed, this prediction is a top candidate considering this mode was present in previous RE titles; a staple for the franchise, and was notably added to RE4 Remake as a post-launch update.

As he revealed these updates, he flicked through several pages of memes, which fans speculate could hint at the nature of the DLC and other additional content. Images of a matching puzzle game and poker were included, suggesting the upcoming mini-game may be tied to these mechanics.
However, the most notable of these memes was "Forbidden Requiem," which depicts Leon being embraced by a mysterious woman. This is a clear nod to a hot topic within the community, where many noticed that the fan-favorite agent was wearing a wedding ring at the end of RE9 and in the game’s concept art.
While these could all just be purely Nakanishi having fun with the fans of the franchise, players speculate that RE9’s DLC could revolve around Leon’s private life, specifically after the events of RE6. During this time, the series shifted to other storylines with RE7 and RE Village, leaving a huge chunk of Leon’s life unexplored.
Nakanishi Responds to Edited Messages

The RE fanbase is currently in deep discussion over the identity of Leon’s spouse. Ada Wong and Claire Redfield are the top candidates, with some fans even joking that it might be Chris Redfield.
The debate has intensified as screenshots circulate online that seem to show Nakanishi’s messages confirming that Ada is Leon’s wife. These messages have since become the centerpiece of the ongoing shipping wars and even caught the attention of the director himself.
In a series of stories on his Instagram account, Nakanishi addressed the controversy, noting that he had been "called out for screenshots of edited messages." While his response carefully avoids confirming or denying Ada’s status as Leon’s partner, it hasn't stopped the community from theorizing about who Leon’s wife might be.

Nakanishi also expressed his gratitude to fans for their overwhelming support, admitting he has struggled to keep up with the sheer volume of messages. As a result, the director has entered "hermit mode," taking a hiatus from social media and likely focusing on the development of RE9’s DLC.
Resident Evil Requiem is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. To stay up-to-date with the latest information about the game, check out our article below!
