Best Starting Weapon

Best Starting Weapon

  1. Panacea Fan
  2. Vernal Umbrella
  3. Nameless Sword
  4. Nameless Spear
  5. Thundercry Blade

1. Panacea Fan

Panacea Fan Weapon

Pros and Cons
Monster Hunter Wilds - Pro Good Sustain

Monster Hunter Wilds - Pro Easy to Use

Monster Hunter Wilds - Con Low Damage

The Panacea Fan is the best choice for a starting weapon because of its ability to heal you and your allies. Healing is scarce in the early game, so having the ability to recover lost HP makes combat more forgiving.

Most combat encounters are made easier to handle because the Panacea Fan's attacks are ranged. This means you can deal damage safely from a distance.

Vernal Umbrella

Vernal Umbrella

Pros and Cons
Monster Hunter Wilds - Pro Good Combo Potential

Monster Hunter Wilds - Pro Extremely Versatile

Monster Hunter Wilds - Pro Ranged Playstyle

Monster Hunter Wilds - Con Lacks Damage

The Vernal Umbrella is a versatile weapon with a combination of ranged and melee attacks, a projectile block, and crowd control abilities. Its wide array of abilities makes it exceptionally flexible and allows you to adapt to many different situations.

While the Vernal Umbrella is simple to learn and hard to master, its unique design and mechanics make it an excellent weapon to progress through the game with, as you learn to take fights on your own terms.

Vernal Umbrella and Inkwell Fan Build

Can Be Obtained Later at Kaifeng

Of all the starting weapons, the Vernal Umbrella is the only one that requires you to progress through Kaifeng to obtain it.

The rest of the weapons in this list can be obtained in Qinghe through other means, so keep this in mind when making your decision as you can only get one Weapon from Qi Shan.

Kaifeng Exploration Guide

Nameless Sword

Nameless Sword

Pros and Cons
Monster Hunter Wilds - Pro Can Unleash Enhanced Sword Waves

Monster Hunter Wilds - Pro Can Re-Engage and Disengage

Monster Hunter Wilds - Con Endurance Heavy

The Nameless Sword is one of the weapons that you start with at the beginning of the game, but it is by no means an inferior weapon. Its strength lies in its ability to weave in and out of combat and use its Shadow Step to launch sword waves down range to maintain pressure.

Unfortunately, using the Shadow Step requires proper endurance management and takes some getting used to.

Nameless Spear and Nameless Sword Build

Nameless Spear

Storm Dance

Pros and Cons
Monster Hunter Wilds - Pro Can Immobilize Targets

Monster Hunter Wilds - Pro Enhanced Attacks During Unrivaled State

Monster Hunter Wilds - Pro Can Restore Endurance

Monster Hunter Wilds - Con Storm Dance Eats Endurance Fast

The Nameless Spear is surprisingly strong with a good mix of light and heavy attacks, with some thrusting for good measure. The Nameless Spear utilizes the Unrivaled State in order to enhance it's attacks.

Its strongest attack, Storm Dance, is incredibly powerful but depletes endurance quickly. It can only be used if the enemies are immobilized or in the execute state.

Thundercry Blade

Thundercry Blade

Pros and Cons
Monster Hunter Wilds - Pro Decent Reach

Monster Hunter Wilds - Pro Extremely Versatile

Monster Hunter Wilds - Pro Can Hit Multiple Targets

Monster Hunter Wilds - Con Slow and Cumbersome

The Thundercy Blade is a slow-moving, hard-hitting weapon that can mitigate incoming damage using its abilities.

Its charged attacks allows you to unleash powerful strikes when the opportunity arises, and it's wide swings allows you to hit multiple targets at once.

Its innate survivability makes it a great choice for players who want to play as a tank, as it can outlast most, if not all, of your allies.

Starting Weapon Criteria

Gauged by Ability and Adapatability

Abilities Weapons are ranked based on the strength of their unique ability and how practical it is during combat.
Adaptability The capacity of a weapon to serve its intended function in the majority of combat scenarios.
Damage Last but not least is the most important metric: damage, which determines how quickly combat encounters end.

Although the Panacea fan offers the most advantages early in the game, based on our criteria, you can choose a different starting weapon if you think you'll have more fun with it.

All weapons and Martial Arts can be obtained later in the game and there are multiple ways to acquire them. Ultimately, you can choose whichever weapon you want, because your enjoyment of the game is what really matters.
