The story of Where Winds Meet takes place in China, particularly during the era of the Song Dynasty. It is notable for a period of political upheaval, where divided dynasties and kingdoms held power and control over the country.

The baby featured at the beginning of the game is the protagonist, who was rescued by Uncle Jiang. Years later, the protagonist grows up under the care of Aunt Han in Blissful Retreat.
Starting with the attack of a masked assassin, the protagonist becomes entangled in a chain of events that will lead to conspiracies involving the disappearance of their Uncle Jiang, their unknown origins, and the people they will meet on their unexpected journey.

Uncle Jiang is known as the man carrying the baby from the start of the game. He raises the protagonist and later assumes the role as their adoptive father. Uncle Jiang mysteriously disappears at some point during the timeskip, where the only clue to his whereabouts is in a letter from someone named Tian Ying.

The Jianghu is a constructive term used to describe the fantastical society of martial arts, which commonly takes place in settings under the wuxia genre.

The story begins with Jiang Yan, who is carrying an unnamed child and is on the run with Chen Zixi. During the pursuit, the soldiers exclaim that Jiang Yan has killed his father and stolen the Zhenghuan Jade.
The pursuit stops at a temple, and Jiang Yan is intercepted by the Void King, whom Jiang Yan promptly defeats. Shortly after the battle, Jiang Yan receives a vision of a battlefield, as well as himself brandishing his weapon against a white-haired figure sitting atop a statue.
As the vision ends, Jiang Yan wakes up and realizes that the Void King has risen and stabbed Chen Zixi. Chen Zixi falls to the ground, and we see that the butterfly that temporarily possessed the Void King is returning to the white-haired figure that Jiang Yan has seen in the vision.

The story continues in the present day (962 CE) of the Song dynasty. It begins with our protagonist as a fully grown adult, indicating the passage of time since we last saw Jiang Yan carrying the protagonist as a baby in the flashback.
The protagonist is attacked and defeated by a masked assassin who promptly steals the jade necklace that they were wearing. The assassin incapacitates the protagonist and leaves.

On the night of the banquet, the Aureate Pavilion launches an attack on Blissful Retreat, which results in the destruction of the village and the loss of many villagers' lives. While protecting the village from the pavilion's aggression, Ruby and Yi Dao also lose their lives in the process. Only a few, including the protagonist, were able to survive this tragedy.

Over the course of the protagonist's journey, it is revealed that Aunt Han has been running an underground operation and has been secretly performing surgery to change people's appearances. Victims of these surgeries can be found lingering in Still Shore, who happen to be the zombie-like enemies that have been encountered in the area earlier.
The Aureate Pavilion sought out this information by attacking Blissful Retreat. However, Aunt Han had already disappeared by then, along with the records regarding these surgeries.

After the destruction of Blissful Retreat, the protagonist resumes their journey to Kaifeng, hoping to learn more about Aunt Han, Jiang Yan, and their origins. The protagonist will later sneak into the Heroes Assembly to find Wen Wuque, who is hailed as the Ember of East by Kaifeng citizens.
This will ultimately unravel a more complex political involvement and conspiracies surrounding the region, with Big Zhao and Shopkeer Fu joining the protagonist.
