To befriend Pei Mao, all you have to do is talk positively about cats and how much you like them.

I should take a name worthy of whiskers and grace—something like Purrcy, so every syllable purrs like a kitten's lullaby. Who needs scrolls when you have loaf-shaped serenity? Pei Mao is on the roof of the house south of Blissful Retreat, on the tip of the southern path passing through Still Shore on the west and Kilnfire Ridge on the east.

On the Roof of the House West of the Dreamscape
After Blissful Retreat is destroyed in the Chapter 1 finale For Whom Does He Return, some residents including Pei Mao are transferred to Blissful Retreat - Dreamscape. To unlock the Dreamscape map, you need to complete the Worldly Affairs quest Dream in Flames.
Pei Mao is on the roof of a house near Li Peiran's Madiao Cards game, west of the Dreamscape map.

How to Succeed in AI Chat
Reset Dialogue When Stuck
If your conversation has gone off the rails, or doesn't end no matter what you say, it's best to simply reset and start anew from a clean slate by clicking the button with a Refresh icon at the top of the chat box. Instead of trying several methods within one conversation, trying one strategy at a time and refreshing if it doesn't go anywhere is generally more effective.
Return to Login Screen if Combat Begins
Sometimes, NPCs will suddenly become violent during AI dialogues. When this happens, it's best to just bail out to the login screen; when you return, the NPC will be found just as they were before the conversation started.
If you accidentally kill a dialogue-capable NPC, our experience has shown that they will respawn, but this has not been heavily tested, so it's best to simply avoid engaging them in combat.
Double-Check the Hint
Even if the NPC appears to be happy with the result of your discussion, this won't always end the dialogue. Double-checking the text written in the hint will imply the win condition, so try strategies which will lead the dialogue towards that result.
