Since Mega Lucario's moveset is locked to Close Combat and Power-Up Punch, it's only gameplay will just revolve around setting up Close Combat with Power-Up Punch. The key to this build is fully charging Power-Up Punch to knock up the target, then bursting them down with Close Combat.
| Item | Explanation |
|---|---|
Attack Weight
|
Attack Weight adds another layer of damage to Lucario's attacks and moves. Fully stacked Attack Weight should push Mega Lucario's damage output to higher levels. |
Energy Amplifier
|
Energy Amplifier can significantly boost Mega Lucario's damage output for a duration after using Aura Cannon and mega evolving. |
Focus Band
|
Focus Band is good for increasing bulk as well as having a lifeline for when Mega Lucario's HP drops too low. |
Muscle Band
|
Muscle Band is the best choice for an offensive item due to its attack speed increase and percentage based damage, enabling Mega Lucario to trade blows with enemies. |
Weakness Policy
|
Weakness Policy is good for a more defensive setup as its effect forces Mega Lucario to take damage to maximize the gains. |
Accel Bracer
|
Accel Bracer provides Mega Lucario with a large amount of Attack stat, improving its overall damage. |
Lucarionite
|
Lucarionite is a default item for Mega Lucario, and it cannot be changed. |
Held Item Tier List: Best Items to Equip
| Item | Explanation |
|---|---|
Full Heal
|
Full Heal Full Heal compensates for Mega Lucario's weakness to crowd control by granting it immunity to debuffs for a short amount of time. |
Eject Button
|
Eject Button gives Lucario utility. In addition to using it as an escape tool, it works in conjuction with Mega Lucario's dash combos to surprise unaware opponents with high burst damage. |
X Speed
|
X Speed further improves Mega Lucario's overall mobility, which is useful for offensive and defensive means. |
Since Lucario can only mega evolve into Mega Lucario when it uses Aura Cannon, you need to focus on reaching level 9 as fast as possible to learn the Unite Move and gain the ability to mega evolve.
You may need to play a bit safer at the start just until you reach level 9. The longer you reach level 9 the less impact Mega Lucario will have in the game since the number of times you can use Aura Cannon and mega evolve dwindles as time passes.
Since Mega Lucario's moveset is locked to Close Combat and Power-Up Punch, your gameplay will mostly revolve around setting up Close Combat with Power-Up Punch, especially when you're mega evolved.
When going for a knockout, charge up Power-Up Punch to quickly get to melee range of your target, then immediately follow up with Close Combat. If you're mega evolved, you should always fully charge Power-Up Punch before releasing the button to trigger the move's knockup effect, allowing you to easily hit Close Combat.
Since using Aura Cannon will trigger the mega evolution, it's best you use it only for important fights like when taking objectives.
Unlike the regular Lucario, you have to be more conservative in using Aura Cannon during fights. Avoid using it just to get a knockout or survive a duel, particularly if the 2 minute mark is close.

|
| Start by using Aura Cannon to mega evolve, then fully charge Power-Up Punch before dashing. Once the target is knocked up, immediately follow up with Close Combat, which will reduce Power-Up Punch's cooldown just enough to allow you to use it again. | |

||
Mega Lucario has to land its combos and mega evolve to be effective in fights. Pokemon that can completely stop Mega Lucario's movements and prevent it from mega evolving will be the most effective against it.
| Pokemon | Explanation |
|---|---|
Slowbro
|
Rating: ★★★★★ • Can completely stop Mega Lucario's combos using Telekinesis and/or Slowbeam, or interrupt them with Surf. • Can deal high Sp. Atk. damage using Scald. |
Wigglytuff
|
Rating: ★★★★★ • Interrupts Mega Lucario's combos with Sing or Dazzling Gleam. • Negates Lucario's damage using Starlight Recital. |
Alolan Ninetales
|
Rating: ★★★★ • Can disrupt Mega Lucario's combos and deal considerable damage using Blizzard and Avalanche. |
Mega Lucario can get the upper hand against these Pokemon if it can mega evolve and successfully perform its combos without interruption.
| Ranged, Fragile Pokemon with High Damage |
|---|
| How to Beat |
|
• These Pokemon prefer to keep their distance from opponents when fighting. They also have high damage potential that can be dangerous for Mega Lucario. However, they are fragile and can get knocked out by Mega Lucario fast. Utilizing Mega Lucario's mobility to quickly get close to them and perform its combos is the best way to win against them. • Use Power-Up Punch to quickly get close, then follow up with Close Combat. Make sure to utilize Power-Up Punch's cooldown reduction/reset mechanic for a full combo. • As a last resort, use Aura Cannon and mega evolve to enhance your combo. |
| All-Rounders |
|---|
| How to Beat |
|
• Much like Mega Lucario, these Pokemon excel in close combat and rely mostly on their attacks or combos to deal damage. They are also durable enough to tank Mega Lucario's damage. Winning against them is just a matter of striking first and performing combos. • Use Power-Up Punch to quickly get close, then follow up with Close Combat. Make sure to utilize Power-Up Punch's cooldown reduction/reset mechanic for a full combo. • As a last resort, use Aura Cannon and mega evolve to enhance your combo. |
| High-mobility Pokemon with Burst Damage |
|---|
| How to Beat |
|
• These Pokemon are incredibly agile and deal high burst damage. However, they become vulnerable when they miss their burst damage attempt. • Use Eject Button or X Speed to dodge their moves, then retaliate with Power-Up Punch and Close Combat. • As a last resort, use Aura Cannon and mega evolve to enhance your combo. |
| Highly Durable Pokemon |
|---|
| How to Beat |
|
• These Pokemon are extremely durable, making it difficult for Lucario to take them down alone. With that, it's best to group up with allies to bring them down with the help of Lucario. • Use Power-Up Punch to initiate, then follow up with Close Combat. Make sure to utilize Power-Up Punch's cooldown reduction/reset mechanic for a full combo. |
Pokemon that have low mobility and durability can easily fall to Lucario's combos.
|
• Use Power-Up Punch to quickly get close, then follow up with Close Combat. Make sure to utilize Power-Up Punch's cooldown reduction/reset mechanic for a full combo. • As a last resort, use Aura Cannon and mega evolve to enhance your combo. |
| Supporters |
|---|
| How to Beat |
|
• These Pokemon usually stick with their allies and rarely venture alone. Although they themselves pose no threat to Mega Lucario, their support capabilities makes them valuable during fights. • Take advantage of them being in close proximity to each other by spamming Power-Up Punch and Close Combat. • You can also use Aura Cannon to mega evolve and enhance your combo. |
