Since the build takes into account move damage, Zacian's critical-hit damage, and Zacian's basic attack damage, equipping items that will produce the best possible outcome in terms of damage with minimal trade-offs is the ideal item combination.
As the results show, Muscle Band and a fully-stacked Attack Weight will yield the best outcome that takes all three damage output into account. Even if the item combination did not generate the highest damage in all three tests, it does take into account both move and attack damage, which is the best deal Zacian can have compared to others.
As for choosing alternatives, replacing Attack Weight with Weakness Policy would be the best option. The damage from all tests is only slighty less than the recommended item combination.
However, should critical-hit rate be a factor, replacing Attack Weight with Scope Lens would be the appropriate choice. Although the item combination does poorly in all three damage tests, having more chances of dealing critical-hits should make up for it.
These damage tests are conducted using the Training Dummy in Practice Mode.

This is a high-mobility build centered on taking out targets one by one using Metal Claw, Agility, and attacks. It's best used in the jungle, so that Zacian can level up quickly and have access to both moves.

Since the build is centered on utilizing Metal Claw, equipping items that increases the move's damage and take advantage of its attack speed effect is the ideal item combination.
Although Muscle Band and Scope Lens deal significantly less Metal Claw damage, Muscle Band's HP-based bonus damage coupled with Scope Lens' increased critical-hit rate and damage will benefit greatly from Metal Claw's increased attack speed effect.
As for alternatives, replacing Scope Lens with Razor Claw would be the ideal option due to its increased critical-hit rate and slowing effect. It will also deal more Metal Claw damage.

Item | Explanation |
---|---|
Attack Weight | Attack Weight greatly increases Zacian's overall damage output, especially when fully stacked. |
Focus Band | Focus Band gives Zacian the durability and survability it needs to pounce on targets and finish them off. |
Scope Lens | Scope Lens makes Zacian deadlier by increasing its critical-hit rate and critical-hit damage. |
Muscle Band | Muscle Band improves Zacian's attacks via increased movement speed and a HP-based damage bonus. |
Razor Claw | Razor Claw gives Zacian's attacks a slow effect whenever it uses a move. It also synergizes well with Zacian's cooldown reset mechanics. |
Rapid-Fire Scarf | Rapid-Fire Scarf gives Zacian a massive attack speed boost that works great with its attacks, especially when boosted. |
Rusted Sword | Rusted Sword is a default item used by Zacian. It cannot be removed, limiting Zacian's held item slots to two (2). |
Item | Explanation |
---|---|
X Speed | X Speed improves Zacian's mobility, allowing it to either stay on top of its targets or escape from enemy assault. |
X Attack | X Attack enhances Zacian's overall damage output and brawling capabilities. |
Move | Explanation |
---|---|
Sacred Sword | Sacred Sword deals massive damage in a wide area around Zacian. It's effective for soloing targets or during teamfights. |
Agility | Agility allows Zacian to chase down enemies and protect itself with a shield. It's a reliable roaming tool perfect for Zacian's aggressive gameplay. |
This moveset is effective for isolating targets and initiating teamfights. It's also easier to execute since the moves have great synergy with each other. Agility gives Zacian an initiation and mobility tool, making it the ideal move to set up Sacred Sword. Sacred Sword deals siginificant area damage thanks to its Defense penetration effect. It also increases Zacian's Attack stat, which can be useful in finishing off targets that are still alive after the move's slashing attack.

Zacian's strength comes primarily from its ability, Intrepid Sword. Once used, Zacian consumes Aeos Energy to boost/enhance its attacks and moves. Managing Aeos Energy is central to playing Zacian effectively.
Intrepid Sword: Zacian Passive Effect and Cooldown
Zacian only needs 15 Aeos Energy to fully boost its attacks and moves. With that, it's best to always have at least 15 Aeos Energy to maximize Zacian's damage.
Note: Only a maximum of 15 Aeos Energy will be consumed if Zacian has more. It will never consume more than 15. |
When Zacian knocks out or assists in knocking out an opponent, that opponent will drop more Aeos Energy than normal. This implies that Zacian should be more active in fighting so it can collect more Aeos Energy.
Note: Zacian doesn't need to use Intrepid Sword to trigger this effect. It just needs to either take out opponents or get an assist. |
Although the game's main objective is to score more points than the opposing team, Zacian can contribute more to its team if it focuses on saving Aeos Energy to boost its attacks and moves rather than scoring them. The Pokemon's main role is to win teamfights for its allies by overpowering opponents, but it can only do so if it uses Intrepid Sword.
Tip: The only time that Zacian should score points instead of consume them for Intrepid Sword is when its team secures Rayquaza since gaining the score lead is the most important objective during the last minutes of the game. |
In most cases, since Zacian can only use one boosted move per Intrepid Sword activation, it's best to prioritize using Sacred Sword or Metal Claw over Agility or Play Rough as they're more effective in fights. However, in scenarios where Zacian needs to escape, using the boosted version of Agility or Play Rough would be necessary.
Zacian's moves have separate cooldowns from their boosted version, allowing them to be used twice in a row. The best way to utilize this mechanic is by charging up Intrepid Sword first, then using the move's boosted version and normal version in quick succession.
Holding down the score button activates Intrepid Sword. Once it's released, its effects take place for a duration. However, the channeling can be canceled simply by pressing the x button for Switch or dragging the move to the upper right corner of the screen for Mobile. Once cancelled, Zacian will stop channeling and all Aeos Energy consumed will be returned.
This mechanic is an important aspect in managing Zacian's Aeos Energy as it allows the Pokemon to avoid wasting them.
When using Sacred Sword, it's best to aim for grouped opponents and catch as many of them as possible within the move's area since the move is essentially a crowd control move. It deals a ton of damage, slows and stuns opponents, increases Zacian's Attack stat, and allows the Pokemon's attacks and moves to partially ignore the opponent's Defense.
Sacred Sword: Zacian Move Effect and Cooldown
When using Metal Claw, it's best to target opponents one by one, especially those that are isolated. Although the move does a lot of damage, it's quite hard to actually hit multiple opponents with it.
Metal Claw: Zacian Move Effect and Cooldown
Hitting an opponent when Zacian charges forward when it uses Metal Claw increases the Pokemon's attack speed for a duration. Always take advantage of this buff to quickly burst down targets.
Use Agility or Play Rough to help Zacian stay on top of targets. In particular, the move can also be used to set up Sacred Sword since Zacian can quickly dive into fights.

It's best to max out on Aeos Energy first before using Sovereign Sword to maximize its damage. Moreover, do not consume Aeos Energy by using Intrepid Sword before using Sovereign Sword. Sovereign Sword is not affected by Intrepid Sword and will consume Aeos Energy on its own when charged.
Tip: Aim for opponents that recently used their Unite Move and still has its buffs. The move deals more damage to them. |

1. The chart is based on our own experience playing Zacian. 2. Pokemon within each tier are unordered 3. Any Pokemon not shown here are still under investigation. |
Zacian is an All-Rounder that relies on its hard-hitting combos and boosted attacks in order to take down its enemies. While its attacks are powerful, it is still a melee Pokemon that is vulnerabie to getting bursted down by ranged attackers, or getting cornered with combos by its fellow All-Rounders.
Pokemon | Explanation |
---|---|
Wigglytuff | Rating: ★★★★★
• Able to interrupt Zacian's combos with Sing or Rollout, and Cute Charm. • Able to slow down Zacian's movement with Double Slap and Dazzling Gleam once it's upgraded. • Can shield its team using Starlight Recital. |
Slowbro | Rating: ★★★★★ • Able to stop Zacian in its tracks with Surf, Telekinesis, and Slowbeam. • Can tank Zacian's damage using Amnesia. |
Alolan Ninetales | Rating: ★★★ • Can freeze Zacian and deal considerable damage Avalanche and Blizzard. |
Making sure Zacian always has enough Aeos Energy to boost its moves and attacks is the best way for it to get the upper hand against these Pokemon.
Ranged, Fragile Pokemon with High Damage |
---|
How to Beat |
• These Pokemon prefer to keep their distance from opponents when fighting. They also have high damage potential that can be dangerous for Zacian. However, they are fragile and can get knocked out by Zacian fast once it gets close to them. • Use Agility to head straight for them, then use Sacred Sword or Metal Claw, and attacks to burst them down. |
All-Rounders |
---|
How to Beat |
• Much like Zacian, these Pokemon excel in close combat and rely mostly on their attacks or combos to deal damage. However, Zacian can buff its damage exponentially through Intrepid Sword and give it a damage advantage. • Make sure to fully charge Intrepid Sword to boost Zacian damage before fighting them, then simply use Sacred Sword or Metal Claw and beat them down with attacks. |
High-mobility Pokemon with Burst Damage |
---|
How to Beat |
• These Pokemon are incredibly agile and deal high burst damage. However, they become vulnerable when they miss their burst damage attempt. • Use Agility to dodge their move, then retaliate with Sacred Sword or Metal Claw and attacks. |
Supporters |
---|
How to Beat |
• These Pokemon usually stick with their allies and rarely venture alone. Although they themselves pose no threat to Zacian, their support capabilities makes them valuable during fights. • It's best to take them out first using attacks and moves to remove their team's support. |
Highly Durable Pokemon |
---|
How to Beat |
• These Pokemon are extremely durable, making it difficult for Zacian to take them down alone. With that, it's best to group up with allies to bring them down with the help of Zacian. • Use Agility or Play Rough to stay on top of them, and use Sacred Sword or Metal Claw to quickly deplete their HP. |
Easy matchups are Pokemon that have low durability and low mobility, making it hard for them to stop Zacian's combos and aggressive play.

Has the user ready its giant sword, charge the sword with Aeos energy, and then slash in front of itself. The user becomes immune to hindrances while the Unite Move button is held down and the user is in its ready stance. The longer the user is in this stance, the more Aeos energy is charged into the sword, the more damage this move deals. If a set amount of Aeos energy or more is charged into the sword, the Unite Move becomes boosted, and the slash's area of effect increases. This boosted Unite Move deals increased damage to opposing Pokemon it hits who have been buffed by their own Unite Move. |
Standard Attack | If basic attacks are performed consecutively within a set time, the effects of the second and subsequent basic attack stages will change as described below. (When the Pokemon is using a move, this set time is extended.) Stage two: The user deals damage to opposing Pokemon and decreases their movement speed. Stage three: The user deals damage to opposing Pokemon while restoring its own HP. Stage four: The user quickly draws near an opposing Pokemon and deals damage to it. All of the user's move cooldowns are reduced. |

Intrepid Sword |
Zacian
If the goal scoring button is held down, the Pokemon with this Ability has its sword charged with Aeos energy, and for a short time, its basic attacks become boosted attacks. In addition, during the effect duration, the Pokemon can use a boosted version of one of its moves once. The longer the goal scoring button is held down, the more Aeos energy is charged into the sword, lengthening the duration of the boos effect on basic attacks and moves. This Ability goes on cooldown after it's triggered. Boosted basic attacks have an increased area of effect and deal additional damage proportional to the opposing Pokemon's HP. When this Pokemon knocks out or assists in knocking out a Pokemon on the opposing team, that Pokemon will drop more Aeos energy than it normally would. |
