Since the build is centered on Surf and Icy Wind, equipping items that will maximize their damage is the ideal item combination.
Out of all the item combinations, Wise Glasses, Choice Specs, and Slick Spoon will be the best for the build. Although it did not generate the highest results, it still does decent damage without requiring Suicune to fully stack an item.
As for alternatives, replacing Wise Glasses with Sp. Atk. Specs would be the ideal choice. The item combination deals the most damage, but it requires Suicune to stack the item first to get the full benefit.
These damage tests are conducted in Practice Mode with Goodra as the Training Partner. The Pokemon is set to level 15 and has no items equipped. The results are taken by substracting the Pokemon's max HP and its HP after taking damage.

As for alternatives, replacing Wise Glasses with Sp. Atk. Specs would be the ideal choice. The item combination deals the most Ice Beam damage, which is more favorable given it has two (2) charges and is easy to hit, and is more benefitial for Suicune thanks to Slick Spoon's HP stat and effect.

Surf can break the pillar of ice created by Icy Wind upon collision, dealing additional damage to opponents. |
![]() |
Icy Wind is a versatile crowd control move that has a special interaction with Surf. |
This moveset deals the most damage and has a strong synergy.
Icy Wind can deal damage and slow opponents, and can also be used to block paths. Surf is a great crowd control move and has a special interaction with Icy Wind. Hitting a pillar of ice created by Icy Wind using Surf breaks it immediately, dealing additional damage.
Let us know why in the comments!
Suicune can get aggressive early on as soon as it gets both of its initial moveset. The combination of Avalanche and Water Pulse on top of its boosted attack and passive makes Suicune extremely strong in the early game.
One effective strategy to do is to use Avalanche first, then use Water Pulse to shove opponents back to Avalanche's area of effect.

Suicune's strength and core gameplay come mostly from Pressure's effects. Playing around these effects is the key to using Suicune effectively.
Pressure: Suicune Passive Effect and Cooldown
Pressure's best effect is enabling Suicune to instantly knock out frozen opponents whose HP is below a set percentage. In order to take full advantage of this effect, Suicune must constantly freeze opponents using its moves.
To do this, just take note that Suicune must drench opponents first using Surf or Whirlpool, then follow up with Ice Beam or Icy Wind to freeze them.
Whenever Suicune hits targets with its moves, it generates a shield and fills up its crystal gauge. The shield can stack up to 2 times, allowing it to tank more damage and prolong its life during fights. Meanwhile, filling up the crystal gauge allows Suicune to perform a boosted attack, which deals additional damage to frozen targets.
Icy Wind and Surf have a special interaction with each other. If Surf collides with ice pillars created by Icy Wind, it instantly breaks it, dealing damage to nearby enemies.
Making use of this special interaction should be Suicune's gameplay when its using Surf and Icy Wind since it will deal more damage.

When using Whirlpool, make sure to always recast the move. Doing so allows Whirlpool to be relocated to a new position and also deal more damage as it passes through the same targets.
The move is also great for zoning out opponents from certain areas, especially when trying to secure objectives.
Whirlpool: Suicune Move Effect and Cooldown
Unlike Suicune's other moves, Endless Ice Spikes can instantly freeze targets even without them being drenched first and also deals a decent amount of damage, making it a great move for setting up a fight.
Endless Ice Spikes: Suicune Move Effect and Cooldown
One unique effect of Endless Ice Spikes is that it can be used even if Suicune is stunned or unable to move. Using the move while stunned will remove all the status effects from Suicune.
Take note of this mechanic during fights as it renders the opponents' disables useless and turn the tides against them.

Start the combo by using Avalanche on top of the target's position. When they try to get away from the move's area, shove them back toward it using Water Pulse, then end the combo with a boosted attack. |
Ice Breaker Combo | |
---|---|
Start by placing one ice pillar beside the target using Icy Wind, then immediately follow up with Surf to quickly break the ice pillar and deal additional damage. Once the ground is drenched, place another ice pillar on top of that area to freeze it, then perform a boosted attack if possible. |
Freezing Waters Combo | |
---|---|
Start by casting Whirlpool on top of the target, then immediately following up with Ice Beam to freeze it. Use Whirlpool again to relocate it and flood the area, then use Ice Beam on the flooded area to freeze it. If possible, perform boosted attack for more damage. |

Suicune's gameplay revolves around triggering the effects of its passive, especially the freeze effect, by hitting opponents with its moves. Pokemon that have immunity against status effects and/or can disable Suicune will make it hard for the Pokemon to execute its gameplay.
Pokemon | Explanation |
---|---|

Ranged, Fragile Pokemon with High Damage |
---|
How to Beat |
• These Pokemon prefer to keep their distance from opponents when fighting. They also have high damage potential that can be dangerous for Suicune. • Strike first using Surf or Whirlpool and Ice Beam or Icy Wind, making sure to freeze them. • Utilize the shield generated from Pressure to tank their damage. • Alternatively, start with Endless Ice Spikes to quickly freeze them and chip away their HP, then follow up with the other moves to finish them off. |
All-Rounders |
---|
How to Beat |
• These Pokemon excel in close combat and rely mostly on their attacks or combos to deal damage. They are also durable enough to tank Suicune's damage. • Keep freezing them using Surf or Whirlpool, Icy Wind or Ice Beam, and Endless Ice Spikes. • Utilize the shield generated from Pressure to tank their damage. |
High-mobility Pokemon with Burst Damage |
---|
How to Beat |
• These Pokemon are incredibly agile and deal high burst damage. However, they become vulnerable when they miss their burst damage attempt or are disabled before they can attempt to attack. • Stop their burst attempt by striking first and freezing them using Surf or Whirlpool, Icy Wind or Ice Beam, and Endless Ice Spikes. • Utilize the shield generated from Pressure to tank their damage. |
Highly Durable Pokemon |
---|
How to Beat |
• These Pokemon are extremely durable, making it hard for Suicune to take them out alone. With that, it's best to group up with allies to bring them down with the help of Suicune. • Keep freezing them using Surf or Whirlpool, Icy Wind or Ice Beam, and Endless Ice Spikes. • Utilize the shield generated from Pressure to tank their damage. |
These Pokemon aren't a threat to Suicune and can easily fall to the Pokemon's damage.
Ranged, Fragile Pokemon with High Damage |
---|
How to Beat |

Pokemon with Strong Disables |
Strong disabling moves like Sing and Slowbeam makes it easier for Suicune to set up its moves. Morever, those Pokemon can take the frontlines, allowing Suicune to safely use its moves from the backlines. | |
![]() ![]() |
Pokemon with High Burst Damage |
Since Suicune can execute frozen targets whose HP is below a set percentage, Pokemon that have high burst damage can quickly bring targets' HP low enough for Suicune to finish them off. |
