Since Mega Gyarados' moveset is locked to Waterfall and Dragon Breath, it's only gameplay will just revolve around beating targets with attacks with the help of the moves.
| Item | Explanation |
|---|---|
Attack Weight
|

Scope Lens
|
Scope Lens makes Mega Gyarados' attacks deadlier through increased critical-hit rate and damage, which works nicely with Dragon Breath's buff. |
Muscle Band
|
Muscle Band improves Mega Gyarados' attacks through increased damage and attack speed, which works well with Dragon Breath's buff. |
Weakness Policy
|
Weakness Policy provides Mega Gyarados offense via an Attack boost and defense through an HP boost. It also works well with Flail's HP-based damage. |
Accel Bracer
|
Accel Bracer compliments Mega Gyarados' aggressive melee gameplay, increasing its Attack stat when it knocks out an opponent or gets an assist. |
Held Item Tier List: Best Items to Equip
| Item | Explanation |
|---|---|
Full Heal
|
Full Heal protects Mega Gyarados from crowd control effects, allowing it to continue attacking. |
Eject Button
|
Eject Button gives Mega Gyarados a versatile mobility tool, which can also be activated while using Waterfall. |
Since Gyarados can only mega evolve into Mega Gyarados when it uses Dragon Current, you need to focus on reaching level 9 as fast as possible to learn the Unite Move and gain the ability to mega evolve.
You need to play safer at the start just until you reach level 9. The longer you reach level 9 the less impact Mega Gyarados will have in the game since the number of times you can use Dragon Current and mega evolve dwindles as time passes.
Gyarados' ability, Intimidate, allows the Pokemon to decrease the Attack of the opponents it damages. This gives Gyarados a significant advantage against Attack-type Pokemon.
Once Gyarados mega evolves, its ability changes to Mold Breaker, allowing the Pokemon to ignore some of the opponent's Defense. This effect translates to more damage, so make sure to get aggressive with it.
When Mega Gyarados attacks, it lunges towards the target, allowing the Pokemon to easily stay on top its target. Utilize this attack mechanic when going for a knockout.
When Mega Gyarados uses Dragon Breath, it will follow up with a barrage of attacks, lunging at random targets that are hit by the gust. While attacking, you will not be able to control Mega Gyarados for a duration.
However, if the move only hits one target, Mega Gyarados will only chase down that target. Given this, it's best to use the move on a key target like the opponent's carry or support to quickly take them out.
When Mega Gyarados hits opponents with Waterfall, the move's cooldown is reduced for each hit. This allows the Pokemon to easily spam the move during fights, all while gaining the additional effects of each charge.
Since using Dragon Current will trigger the mega evolution, it's best you use it only for important fights like when taking objectives.
Unlike the regular Gyarados, you have to be more conservative in using Dragon Current during fights. Avoid using it just to get a knockout or survive a duel, particularly if the 2 minute mark is close.

Pokemon that have a lot of disabling moves can disrupt Mega Gyarados' assault completely during fights.
| Pokemon | Explanation |
|---|---|
Slowbro
|
Rating: ★★★★★ • Can disrupt Mega Gyarados' attacks with Surf, Telekinesis, and Slowbeam. • Is durable enough to tank Gyarados' damage. |
Zacian
|
Rating: ★★★★★ • Can overpower and disable Mega Gyarados with Sacred Sword and attacks. |
Alolan Ninetales
|
Rating: ★★★★ • Can disrupt Mega Gyarados' attacks and deal considerable damage using the Blizzard and Avalanche combo. |
Utilizing all the effects from Mega Gyarados' moves can help it gain the upper hand against these Pokemon.
| Ranged, Fragile Pokemon with High Damage |
|---|
| How to Beat |
|
• These Pokemon prefer to keep their distance from opponents when fighting and have means to do so. They also have high damage potential that can knock out Mega Gyarados quickly. However, they are fragile and can get knocked out by Mega Gyarados fast once it gets close. • Use Dragon Current to get close to them, then resurface once the gauge is full to throw them and deal a lot of damage. • Utilize the Dragon Breath's attack buffs to beat them down after resurfacing from Dragon Current. • Should they manage to flee, use Waterfall to chase them. |
| All-Rounders |
|---|
| How to Beat |
|
• These Pokemon excel in close combat and rely mostly on their attacks or combos to deal damage. They are also durable enough to tank Mega Gyarados' damage. However, they have little to no stuns to disrupt Mega Gyarados' assault. • Use Waterfall to generate a shield and absorb some of their damage while fighting. • Utilize the Dragon Breath's attack buff to effectively trade blows with them. • Should things get messy, use Dragon Current to reset the fight, then resurface once the gauge is full to win the fight. |
| High-mobility Pokemon with Burst Damage |
|---|
| How to Beat |
|
• These Pokemon are incredibly agile and deal high burst damage. However, they become vulnerable when they miss their burst damage attempt. • Use Dragon Current when they're approaching, then resurface when they get close to throw them and deal a high amount of damage. • Be sure to follow up with Dragon Breath upon resurfacing to finish them off. • If they try to flee, use Waterfall to chase them. |
| Highly Durable Pokemon |
|---|
| How to Beat |
|
• These Pokemon are extremely durable, making it a tedious task for Mega Gyarados to take them down alone. With that, it's best to group up with allies to bring them down with the help of Mega Gyarados. • Use Waterfall to stay on top of them. • Utilize the Dragon Breath's attack buff to effectively trade blows with them. |
Easy matchups are Pokemon that can easily fall to Mega Gayrados' moves and attacks and have little to no means of avoiding them.
| Ranged, Fragile Pokemon with High Damage |
|---|
| How to Beat |
|
• These Pokemon prefer to keep their distance from opponents when fighting and have means to do so. They also have high damage potential that can knock out Mega Gyarados quickly. However, they are fragile and can get knocked out by Mega Gyarados fast. • Head straight for them using Dragon Current and burst them down with Dragon Breath and attacks. • If Dragon Current is unavailable, use Waterfall instead when approaching them. |
| Supporters |
|---|
| How to Beat |
|
• These Pokemon usually stick with their allies and rarely venture alone. Although they themselves pose no threat to Mega Gyarados, their support capabilities makes them valuable during fights. • Take advantage of them being in close proximity to each other by using Dragon Breath and utilizing the move's attack buff to beat them down with attacks. • Alternatively, Mega Gyarados can use Dragon Current to approach them and their ally/allies and turn their numbers against them, resurfacing when the gauge is full and throwing them while dealing a large amount of damage. |
