When the Pokemon is damaged by an opposing Pokemon, its movement speed is increased for a short time. This effect can stack up to 5 times. Each time the Pokemon with this Ability knocks out an opposing Pokemon, scores a goal, or otherwise makes a contribution in battle, its effort gauge increases. Once the effort guage is full, the Pokemon evolves into Gyarados.
While still Magikarp, utilize the movement speed boost from Rattled whenever the Pokemon takes damages to either flee or go on the offense.
Gyarados has a unique evolution mechanic. Unlike other Pokemon, Gyarados' evolution isn't based on level. It can only evolve if it fills up its effort gauge. Moreover, its primary moveset will only be available once Magikarp evolves into Gyarados.
That being said, the first and most important objective when playing Gyarados is filling up the effort gauge to evolve. Below are the many ways to fill up the gauge.
One way to fill up the effort gauge is to perform attacks. Magikarp doesn't even need to hit targets to fill up the gauge and can simply perform attacks in place, however, attacking targets fills the gauge faster.
Another way of filling up the effort gauge is by using Flail or Splash, which is Magikarp's moveset before evolving. Much like attacking, the moves don't need to hit targets to fill up the gauge and only adds a small amount. However, if the moves do hit targets, it fills up the gauge more.
Scoring points is another way of filling up the effort gauge but is more effective than attacking and using Flail or Splash. That said, it's best to find ways to safely score points to quickly fill up the gauge.
Note: The more points scored, the more the gauge is filled up. |
Knocking out opponents is the fastest way to fill up the effort gauge but can be difficult to accomplish given Magikarp's lack of damage. Fortunately, getting an assist can also fill up the gauge, although not as much as knocking out opponents.
The best weapon Magikarp has to knock out opponents is Flail. The move deals more damage the lower Magikarp's HP is, allowing the Pokemon to turn its vulnerability into offense.
Note: Knocking out wild Pokemon will not fill up the effort gauge. |
1.14.1.2 | Effort gauge fill-up strength via attacks and moves increased by 50%. |
