Leaves behind the Substitute doll for the user while it's moving forward
If you're going jungle, use Substitute constantly to traverse the map or jungle faster in the early-game. It may not seem much since the dash range is short, but it does speed up moving through the jungle if you use it constantly. Remember that you can go through walls.
The dummy left behind can be targeted by attacks and moves. With a bit of luck, enemies might target the dummy instead of you, especially if they have auto lock on and are just smashing buttons.
The image above is only taken in the Practice Area with a computer-controlled Pokemon. The real effect is grander and can be seen a lot in real matches.
There is a subtle moment when casting Substitute where Greninja gains the invincible status effect. With proper timing, you can completely evade damage and moves.
