Has the user spin rapidly, dealing damage to nearby opposing Pokemon. When the outer edge of the spin hits an opposing Pokemon, the user is granted a shield. If this move hits many opposing Pokemon, or hits Pokemon on the opposing team, the shield effect becomes stronger.
Metagross' positioning plays a crucial role when using Gyro Ball effectively since the move triggers instantly when used and only affects targets that are near the Pokemon. Moreover, Gyro Ball only generates a shield if it hits targets on the outer circle. That said, it's best to always plan out a way to get close enough to targets when using Gyro Ball.
Use Zen Headbutt or Magnet Rise, or Eject Button or X Speed to quickly get close to targets and set up Gyro Ball. This gives Metagross a better chance of hitting targets with Gyro Ball.
Hit as many targets as possible when using Gyro Ball. Aside from dealing damage to multiple targets, the move's shield gets stronger the more enemies it hits, particularly opponents. Hitting both wild Pokemon and opponents would be the best way to maximize the move's shield effect.
Once upgraded, Gyro Ball's shield can heal Metagross for the same amount if it remains after a set time. Utilize this mechanic to help Metagross survive longer during fights.
