The Seasons in Diablo 4 are not just events which recycle the content from the base game – each season will introduce brand-new gameplay features which will only last for that season and may return depending on player feedback.
Each Season will also introduce new story content which is separate from the main story. These stories most likely be exclusive in their specific seasons since they're deeply tied to season mechanics.
In order to participate in Seasonal activities, including the Seasonal questline, Season Journey, and the Battle Pass, players will have to create and play with a new Seasonal Character, as confirmed by Franchise General Manager Rod Fergusson on Twitter.
It's been confirmed that each Season will last for three months, for a total of four a year. Players can use the standardized length as a guideline to help them complete each Season's content on time.
In Diablo 3, players had an option to change an existing character into a Seasonal Character, resetting their progression to Level 1 but allowing them to keep all their existing Items.

"In Diablo 3, players had an option to change an existing character into a Seasonal Character, resetting their progression to Level 1 but allowing them to keep all their existing Items." did you actually play a D3 season? cause rebirthing a character never let you keep your items. the character was fully wiped clean. it was done because they had fewer character slots when they started seasons, and it was a way for people with no more open character slots to play seasons.
