Tempering allows players to add affixes to their gear that lean towards their desired build. To use tempering, players must find Tempering Manuals as regular drops and go to the blacksmith to begin Tempering.

The Affixes from Tempering Manual corresponds to six categories: Weapons, Offensive, Defensive, Mobility, Utility, and Resource.
Here are the key points to tempering items:

Masterworking is an end-game crafting system in the Blacksmith, using materials earned from The Pit of Artificers to upgrade your gear. It improves the overall strength of all affixes on your weapon, and at every 4th tier, it massively upgrades one of your equipped affixes.
Texts of affixes that receive the bonus will have their colors changed based on the number of bonuses they recieve. You can reset the Masterwork of a weapon if you do not like its results.
| Blue | 1 Masterwork Bonus |
|---|---|
| Yellow | 2 Masterwork Bonuses |
| Orange | 3 Masterwork Bonuses |

Season 4 will introduce Greater Affixes to items. These affixes have their values raised by 1.5 and will only appear for Ancestral Legendary and Unique items.
Items with Greater Affixes will drop with a unique audio cue and will have a unique icon in your inventory and the overworld. Greater Affixes cannot be obtained from Enchanting items and can only be obtained from drops.
Item Affixes are now reduced, with only 2 for Rare items and 3 for Legendary items. These affixes are now more effective and no longer have conditional requirements.
Here's a list of more key item changes coming to Season 4:
With these changes, items are now easier to manage, which ones to keep and which ones to salvage and sell.
Gems now have raised effectiveness, and their crafting levels changed. Normal Gems are available at level 51, Flawless Gems at level 71, and Royal Gems at level 91.
Below is a list of the bonus effects of each Gem type:
Salvaging Legendary items will now store their Aspects in your Codex of Power, which can be reused indefinitely. Aside from efficiency, this change also addresses the issue of hoarding legendary items in player stashes.
