What Are Paragon Boards?

Diablo 4 Paragon System Explained

Overview

Paragon Boards are class-specific boards that unlock once a character reaches level 50. Each class has their own set of boards filled with nodes that grant a wide arrange of buffs and passives once unlocked. Each level past level 50 grants 5 paragon points. Additional paragon points are unlocked via character renown.

Navigating The Boards

Players start at the center of the board and radiate outward through the investment of paragon points. These points must be chained together as they progress outward from the center, similar to the Skill Tree. Each board will have gate nodes located in the cardinal directions of the board. Gate nodes serve as connecting points from one board to the other, allowing players to activate multiple boards at the same time.

Boards Can Be Rotated!

Each board can be rotated to connect specific gate nodes with each other. Orienting the boards in a specific way will make navigation across them easier and allows players to map their paragon points efficiently.

Paragon Node Types

Paragon Boards can house three types of nodes. The type will determine the nature of the node's passive effect once it is learned:

  • Stat Nodes: Nodes that increase specific stats for the player once unlocked.
  • Effect Nodes: Nodes that grant augmented effects for skills and specific interactions.
  • Socket Nodes: Nodes that can house Glyphs. These are special items that provide bonuses depending on the type, amount, and/or rarity of the nodes within their effect radius when socketed.

Nodes Have Different Rarities!

Nodes have different rarities that range from Normal to Legendary. These rarities determine their nodes' overall strength and is a major factor for most Glyph requirements. Each board also has one Legendary node that grants a major buff for a specific class mechanic or skill.

Differences Between Diablo 3 and Diablo 4's Paragon Systems

Diablo 4's Paragon Boards are a far cry from Diablo 3's Paragon System in terms of overall complexity and usefulness. D4's iteration offers impactful choices, as opposed to D3's generic paragon buff selection. The point limitation of D4's paragon system also plays into the impact of the system when it comes to a character's build, granting players another avenue of meaningful customization as they journey through hell.
