Masterworking is an endgame feature for upgrading your equipment in Diablo 4 (D4). Read on to learn how to masterwork equipment, as well as the requirements to unlock and use Masterworking.
Steps on Masterworking Equipment |
---|
|
The first step in masterworking your equipment is to temper it through any blacksmith. Regular equipment only needs to be tempered once, while Ancestral equipment needs to be tempered twice to be masterworked.
Although it is not recommended, it is good to know that you can change the affixes applied via Tempering even after upgrading. This means you can temporarily use any tempering manual to get your upgrades started.
After tempering, you must now gather the upgrade materials needed to masterwork your equipment. One of these materials is called Obducite, which is the main component used for upgrading. This can be obtained from clearing Nightmare Dungeons, Infernal Hordes, and The Undercity of Kurast.
Note that Obducite would not drop until your character reaches level 60.
Once you've obtained the necessary materials, you can begin masterworking through the same blacksmiths. The amount and required crafting materials will vary depending on the type, rarity, and rank of equipment you're masterworking.
Non-ancestral Legendary items can now be Masterworked up to 8 times but will not require Forgotten Souls. Additionally, non-ancestral Legendary items can also have up to two Tempered Affixes.

You can also reset the rank of any equipment you've masterworked by clicking on the red circle next to the item. This process has a 100% Success Chance but will cost 30 Iron Chunks or Raw Hide, 20 Veiled Crystals, 5 Forgotten Souls, and a whopping 5,000,000 gold.
Masterwork becomes available after you start obtaining Obducites from Nightmare Dungeons, Infernal Hordes, and The Undercity of Kurast upon reaching level 60. Even though you can obtain Obducites from Normal difficulty, it is recommended to go for higher difficulties to get more material drops.
Masterworking is a feature in Diablo 4 that replaces the regular equipment upgrades from the Blacksmith. However, unlike the regular upgrade system, getting your equipment masterworked will not improve the base stats of the equipment and will only increase the affixes.
The Masterwork feature will increase the affixes on your equipment by 5% every rank, except for every 4 levels where you get to upgrade a random affix by 25%.
