Selling and salvaging items is a common activity to obtain Gold and materials in Diablo 4 (D4). See when you should sell and salvage items and Legendaries in this guide!
List of Contents
It is recommended to salvage equipment early in the game because most item drops are of the common and rare rarity. These items sell for a little amount of Gold and are worth more as a source of materials.
It is a good idea to stock up on materials when you can as you will be burning through these later on by upgrading your gear at the Blacksmith or imprinting Aspects at the Occultist.
Another reason to salvage equipment is to unlock Transmog pieces. Transmog allow you to change the appearance of your equipment without altering its stats.
Transmog Guide - How to Change Appearance
As you progress through the game, you will pick up higher level items. Items with higher levels sell for more Gold. If you have plenty of materials already, it should be safe to sell unwanted equipment.
Certain activities cost plenty of Gold like upgrading equipment and Healing Potions, extracting Aspects, and refunding Skill Points. When you notice that your Gold is running low, it is time to sell some surplus equipment.
Purchasing extra space for your personal stash costs lots Gold. Eventually, you will run out of stash space so do not think twice about saving up for an extra stash tab.
Tips and Strategies for Dealing with Legendaries |

|
If you come across a Legendary that doesn't fit your build but comes with a potent Aspect with a high stat range roll, we recommend extracting the Aspect at the Occultist instead of salvaging them. You can save powerful extracted Legendary Aspects and imprint them onto stronger Rares and Legendaries later to improve your build.
For Legendaries with low stat rolls, low Item Power, or Aspects you don't need in your build, you can salvage them at the Blacksmith for Upgrade Materials.
However, note that the in-game Stash is shared across your characters, so double-check for Legendaries and Aspects that you might use on your alternate characters before salvaging them.
The Legendary upgrade materials Coiling Wards, Abstruse Sigils, and Baleful Fragments can only be salvaged from Legendary Items with at least 400 Item Power. Legendaries below this line will never yield them, while Legendaries above this line will always yield them.
For this reason, it's best not to salvage Legendaries with under 400 Item Power as they will only reward you with Veiled Crystals or lower level mats. Instead, even if you don't need them now, keep them in your stash in case you need to imprint their Aspects later.
While it can be tempting to sell Legendary items to get a quick influx of Gold, we still advise against doing so, as there are plenty of ways to farm Gold in the endgame. We recommend salvaging or stashing mediocre Legendaries instead and clearing Dungeons and Helltides to grind Gold.
