In the lore, Deckard Cain is a legendary Horadric scholar who held a wide range of knowledge of the occult and the arcane. Being part of the Horadrim, he also heavily contributed to the defense against the Prime Evils, leading heroes toward people, artifacts, and methods that could prevent their return.

Guided Players and Identified Items

In-game, Deckard Cain acted as a mentor figure, giving players quests and leads on their journey to stop Diablo and the other Prime Evils. He also provided item identification for free in main towns, letting players save on Gold and unidentify their entire inventory with a single click.

Deckard is most fondly remembered by players for his iconic line, "Stay awhile and listen."
