The Necromancer can focus entirely on being a backline caster and having its underlings fight on the frontlines. This allows the Necromancer to fight from a safe distance while also having free DPS from its summoned skeletons which the Necromancer can resummon again from slain enemies. Alternatively, the Necromancer can use the Book of the Dead and then sacrifice its Skeleton-Raising abilities to enhance the Necromancer's main fighting capabilities.
Flash Farming refers to entering a mob group and clearing them immediately then moving on to the next one. This is due to one of the Necromancer's signature skills “Corpse Explosion” which allows you to consume a corpse (either from slain enemies or those generated by corpse-creating skills) and then make it explode to deal high amounts of damage near the corpse's vicinity.
Using Corpse Explosion allows you to create new corpses from the slain enemies and it costs 0 resource (and even generate Essence with the right passives). This means you can simply kill one weak enemy in a group then create a chain explosion from that one corpse and move on to new mob groups!
There are multiple build archetypes you can play as the Necromancer! Manipulate blood and be a blood-draining magic caster, raise skeletal walls and sling sharp bones as a bone-slinging magician, or even enhance your skeletal army with curses and shadow spells! All Archetypes have their different playstyles and properly using the Book of the Dead is key to maximizing each archetype to its fullest!
![]() ![]() |
Since the class has multiple archetypes and each archetype greatly affects the necromancer's playstyle, it's hard to single out the Necromancer's weaknesses. Solo builds will greatly affect the Necromancer's defenses so being fragile is often an issue on summoner archetypes while focusing on blood skills means you deal less damage if the enemy's DPS is too high to build up fortify.
For summoner builds, the main DPS of the Necromancer comes from the damage you get from all the slowly stacking Necromancer auto attacks. This may seem great at first glance but what this means is that if your skeletons eventually get annihilated (most often during a lengthy boss fight), the Necromancer's DPS will greatly plummet. This makes the summoner Necromancer archetype weak against bosses, especially after the Post Beta Severslam nerfs to the Necromancer which greatly reduced the skeleton's durability.
The Book of the Dead is a unique Necromancer specialization that allows the Necromancer to use Raise Skeleton and Raise Golem. Both are summoning skills and are not included in the Necromancer's main skill tree and the Book of the Dead also gains new skeleton modifiers as the Necromancer gains more levels.
Skeletal Warriors | Summons melee skeletal warriors. Low Durability front liners that output a steady amount of DPS. Level Unlocked: Level 1 |
---|---|
Skeletal Mages | Ranged Skeletal Mages. Much more fragile than the Skeletal Warriors but gain a range advantage for more consistent DPS. Level Unlocked: Level 15 |
Golem | Summons one golem. High durability and can be commanded to use special attacks. Commands vary depending on chosen Book of the Dead upgrade. Level Unlocked: Level 25 |
NOTE: Both Skeletal Warriors and Skeletal Mages belong to the Raise Skeleton skill while Golem belongs to Raise Golem. You can have all three summons up by equipping both skills at the same time!

The Necromancer has multiple archetypes which greatly change the way the Necromancer plays. Maximizing each Archetype is the key to mastering the Necromancer.
Blood Necromancers focus on draining blood from enemies and granting themselves sustain and Fortify. Play on the frontlines and maximize your AoE damage as a Blood Necromancer. Be sure to stay on the frontline and soak up damage to dish out the best DPS the Blood build can do!
Bone Necromancers utilize Vulnerability and critical strikes. Maximize the Bone Necromancer's dps by fighting from a distance and hurling Bone Spears at enemies to obliterate groups of mobs and even elites easily.
Shadow Necromancer utilizes minion buffs to increase the damage your skeleton can do. Play around your minions and golems to maximize everyone's DPS as shadow blight and other shadow skills can enhance the damage they deal to enemies. This build is perfect for dealing single-target DPS to enemies as long as you can keep your skeletons alive.
Corpse Explosion is one of the signature skills of the Necromancer and for good reason. You can create 1 corpse from a weak mob and then make it explode to eliminate all enemies in the vicinity. All enemies that died will now leave their corpses for you to use Corpse Explosion on. This allows for easy chain reactions to quickly dispose of groups of enemies. Utilize this especially in the early game if you have no focused build yet to get through the game or even create a full set to maximize this skill!
Skeletons provide a ton of free DPS but they can die from too many hits or from strong AoE attacks. Make sure to resummon new corpses or heal them with the right passives to ensure that your skeletons are up at all time if you are playing a necromancer with summon skills!
Necromancer Stat Priority | |
---|---|
Intelligence ▶ Dexterity ▶ Willpower ▶ Strength | |
Intelligence | Intelligence directly pumps up our DPS by increasing our skill damage. As the Necromancer's main stat, make sure you always prioritize gear that gives high intelligence stat! |
Dexterity | One of the biggest damage multipliers you can ask for in Diablo 4 comes from critical hits. Dexterity directly increases your critical strike chance so make sure to always consider Dexterity as well moving forward with your item and gear choices! |
Willpower | Arguable the more useful lesser stat for the Necromancer. Willpower increases our resource generation, healing received, and overpower damage. These are good bonuses but resource generation is an easy stat to obtain from the Necromancer's kit while healing bonuses and overpower damage only shine for blood skill builds. We only highly recommend investing in Willpower when playing the said build archetype. |
Strength | Armor increases when we increase our Strength. As the Necromancer, this only becomes useful when you don't have your skeletal minions to divide aggro for you such as when you play a solo Necromancer build. Try to avoid the Strength Stat as it only occupies an item affix that can be used for something more crucial. |
