The Tempering System allows players to add a new affix to their equipment at the Blacksmith. However, the affixes must first by unlocked by collecting the appropriate Temper Manuals.
You can also re-temper an item to obtain a better affix. However, equipment can only be tempered a limited number of times based on its "Tempers" stat.
Masterworking enhances the effects of affixes on fully tempered items such as Ancestral Legendary, Ancestral Unique, and Mythic Unique items.
Masterworking can be done up to 12 times per item, increasing affix effectiveness by 5% per upgrade, while every 4th upgrade boosts a random affix by 25%. Non-Ancestral equipment can be Masterworked up to 4 times.
This is a late game equipment upgrading system you'll spend most of your Crafting Materials on, once you get your best-in-slot equipment. Masterworking requires Obducite and other Crafting Materials.
At the Blacksmith, you can forge Mythic Uniques using Resplendent Sparks. These sparks are obtained by salvaging unwanted Mythic Uniques, allowing you to effectively reroll unwanted Mythic Uniques you've acquired to ones that better fit your build.
Salvaging equipment is essential for gathering crafting materials as it is also the most consistent way to farm these materials. High-rarity items, such as Legendaries, provide rare materials like Veiled Crystals, Coiling Wards, Abstruse Sigils, and Baleful Fragments.
When you salvage a Legendary item, the aspect imbedded will automatically be registered in your Codex of Power. As you hunt for aspects with higher values, look for items with a crossed sword icon. This would indicate that the aspect imbedded in that item is an upgrade to your current entry in the Codex of Power.
Legendary items without the crossed sword icon are better sold for a good amount of gold unless you need the upgrade materials from salvaging them.
Items marked with a Pickaxe Icon in the Salvage screen will unlock Transmog options for you once scrapped. Transmog options are possible for all item rarities, with some Legendary items unlocking truly unique looks for you to choose from, later on.
Transmog Guide: How to Change Appearance
Broken or damaged equipment can be repaired at the Blacksmith using Gold. Items lose 10% durability when you die, and the Blacksmith ensures your gear stays battle-ready!
An icon above your EXP bar will appear if at least one of your items is at low durability or is broken.
Methods to Upgrade Gear |
---|
|
The Tempering system allows you to upgrade your gear by adding special Tempering-exclusive affixes. These special affixes are unlocked by getting the appropriate Temper Manuals. This system is an easy way to upgrade gear and is recommended at most stages of progression.
Once you've tempered your gear, you can further enhance its affixes using the Masterworking system. This late-game upgrade method requires Obducite and other crafting materials to increase the effect of your gear's affixes.
To unlock the Blacksmith, players must complete the Prologue and reach Kyovashad. Once the Prologue is finished, the Blacksmith will become available across the open-world.
