Add Affixes to Items with the Tempering System

PTR introduces a new crafting system called the Tempering System where players can add affixes to their items at the Blacksmith. To do so, players will need to have Temper Manuals as these will determine what affixes you can add to your gear.

Temper Manuals can be obtained by completing Nightmare Dungeons. Upon obtaining a Temper Manual, you will have unlimited uses for them but can only attach one of their available affixes at a time.

Upgrade Items with Masterworks

Another crafting system added to the game is Masterworking, where players can use materials gathered from The Pit to upgrade items. This system is more aimed towards the late-game as this improves the value of your current affixes.

Masterworking includes 12 upgrade ranks and with every fourth rank, a single affix is upgraded significantly while other ranks increase the value of all affixes.

Salvage Unwanted Equipment for Crafting Materials

Diablo 4 - Blacksmith Salvaging

One of the primary functions of the Blacksmith is equipment salvaging. Since upgrades for your weapons, armor, and jewelry are gated by Crafting Materials, salvaging will allow you to amass a sizeable amount of materials by simply scrapping junk items you do not plan to use.

Additionally, salvaging equipment is the only way to obtain certain rare upgrade materials like Veiled Crystals, Coiling Wards, Abstruse Sigils, and Baleful Fragments.

Repair Broken and Damaged Equipment

Diablo 4 - Blacksmith Repairing

The Blacksmith can also repair any of your broken or damaged equipment in exchange for Gold. In Diablo 4, items lose 10% durability after you die and respawn at a checkpoint. An icon above your EXP bar will appear if at least one of your items is at low durability or is broken.

How to Upgrade Weapons and Armor

Spend Gold and Crafting Materials to Upgrade the Item

Diablo 4 - How to Upgrade Weapons and Armor

While the Blacksmith can upgrade all weapons and armor regardless of their rarity, it is generally advised to only upgrade Rare, Legendary, and Unique quality equipment, as these offer the most returns after spending Gold and precious Crafting Materials.

To begin upgrading, select the item you want to upgrade from your equipment, inventory, or stash, before dragging it to the Upgrade tab of the Blacksmith. Once slotted in, spend Gold and Crafting Materials to upgrade your weapon or armor to its desired level.

Upgrade Costs Vary by Rarity and Item Power

Depending on your gear's Item Power, the Gold and material costs of upgrading can vary. In addition, you can only upgrade regular Rare items up to three times, while Legendaries, Uniques, and Sacred and Ancestral Rares have five upgrade tiers.
