Diablo 4 - Who is Inarius

Inarius is a central figure in the lore of Diablo 4 (D4). Once an archangel, Inarius was imprisoned to be tortured in Hell for eternity. Read on to learn more about Inarius, what he has done in the past, and what his role is expected to be in the new story of Diablo 4 (D4).

Who Is Inarius?

Formerly an Archangel from the High Heavens

Inarius
Inarius was an Archangel, who served under Tyrael, the former Archangel of Justice turned Aspect of Wisdom. He was a powerful force on the battlefield, had seized many victories, and was well respected by all angels.

Wished to End the Eternal Conflict

After realizing the brutality of the Eternal Conflict, a war where angels and demons engaged in neverending strife for control of all the realms, Inarius sought to change the status quo.

Fell in Love with Lilith and Fathered the Nephalem

Soon, Inarius was defeated, then imprisoned by the daughter of Mephisto, Lilith. They shared the same sentiments, and teamed up to steal the Worldstone, and create a peaceful world of their own, away from war: Sanctuary. Inarius fell in love with Lilith, and created offspring, half angel and half demon, called Nephalem.

Banished Lilith to the Void

The Nephalem were powerful and seen as a danger to all angels and demons, and were also regarded as the ultimate blasphemy by both sides. Angered at the threat of her Nephalem offspring being exterminated, Lilith slaughtered angels and demons alike. Unable to strike her down, Inarius instead banished Lilith to the Void, an empty realm so far away from all others, it was considered a fate worse than death.

Took Part in the Sin War

Soon, Sanctuary was discovered by the Prime Evils who attempted to get humanity on their side. Inarius created his religion, the Cathedral of Light, to counter the demons' advances.

Defeated by Uldyssian and Imprisoned by Mephisto

Lilith had returned from the Void, and had influenced Uldyssian and a new army of awakened Nephalem called Edyrem to destroy both religions. After banishing Lilith to the Void once more, Inarius was then bested by Uldyssian, finally captured, then sent to Mephisto, to be imprisoned and tortured in Hell forever.

Inarius' Role in Diablo 4

Inarius Is Free and Fights Lilith in Hell

Inarius in Hell
In the Diablo 4 Official Release Date Trailer, Inarius is seen finally out of imprisonment, bringing with him an army of Pale Knights to Hell, and fighting against Lilith and her army of demons.

The exact circumstances of his escape from imprisonment and his motives for fighting Lilith in Hell are still unclear, although all will surely come to light once the game launches on June 6, 2023.

Although, we can surmise that, after being corrupted by the Worldstone, and losing to Uldyssian in battle, and being tortured in Hell for eons, Inarius is certainly no longer be the same person he was.
