Obtained from Screaming Hell Veins During Helltide

Forgotten Souls reliably drop from special ore nodes called Screaming Hell Veins. These nodes only spawn during Helltide and will drop both Forgotten Souls and Aberrant Cinders once interacted with.

Note: Screaming Hell Veins, much like the regular Ore and Glittering Ore Veins, will also reward you with a random amount of either Iron Chunks, Silver Ore, or Gems.

Has a Chance to Drop from Tortured Gifts During Helltide

Forgotten Souls also have a chance to drop when opening Tortured Gifts (including Gifts of Mysteries) during Helltide. If you do not want to hunt down rare ore nodes, you will still be able to get a reliable supply by simply collecting Aberrant Cinders and opening Tortured Gifts.

Has a Chance to Drop from Helltide Harbingers

Forgotten Souls can also drop the elite monsters that spawn during the Helltide event. Keep an eye out for monsters calls Helltide Harbingers as they have a chance to drop both Forgotten Souls and Fiend Roses once killed.

Has a Chance to Drop from Salvaged Sacreds and Ancestrals

As of Season 2, Forgotton Souls have a 5%, and 10% chance to drop from salvaged Sacred and Ancestral gear respectively.

Additionally, two-handed weapons could potentially drop up to 2 Forgotten Souls, while all other item types can only drop a maximum of 1.

Used to Enchant Your Equipment

Forgotten Souls are used to enchant your legendary items at the Occultist. In Diablo 4, enchanting means re-rolling a single affix of your item for something else. Ensure that you have enough Forgotten Souls, Gold, and Veiled Crystals before re-rolling affixes!

How to Upgrade Equipment

Used to Upgrade Legendary Equipment

As of Season 2, Forgotten Souls are also used to upgrade your Sacred and Ancestral Legendary Weapons, Armor, and Jewelry to their max rank of 5. If you find an item with great rolls for your endgame build, you can use Forgotten Souls at a Blacksmith or Jeweler to max it out to rank 5 for higher substat rolls.
