In Diablo 4 (D4), players are required to make new seasonal characters to participate in seasonal content. See why you should create a new character for the season, as well as what happens to seasonal characters when the season ends.

Seasonal Characters are more Powerful
Characters in the Seasonal Realms will always be more powerful compared to characters made in the Eternal Realm. This is due to the seasonal powers and seasonal mechanics active in the seasonal realm, allowing builds of Seasonal Characters to be more powerful.

Should You Make a Seasonal Character?
Yes, You Should Always Make Seasonal Characters
Players who wish to participate in the Sins of the Horadrim are required to create a new character on the new Seasonal Realm. Existing characters in the Eternal Realm cannot be used in seasons.
Creating new characters ensures that players will have a similar starting point for the Season Journey.
Season 9 Release Date and New Features
No Disadvantages for Participating in a Season
There are no downsides to playing in a season as it includes all the content of the base game as well as the new seasonal content. Seasonal characters are not deleted at the end of the season, so making a character in the Eternal Realm will essentially make you miss out on the new seasonal content.
The only reason to make a character in the Eternal Realm would be to try to experience what Diablo 4 was like at launch if you want to try it in a pure form, but there is no in-game benefit of doing so.
Seasonal Characters Progress Seasonal Journey and Battle Pass in the Campaign
According to Rod Fergusson's Tweet, seasonal characters can be used to play the campaign, while still being able to progress through the Season Journey and Battle Pass.
This is another reason to create a seasonal character, even if you have not completed the campaign yet.

Seasonal Characters Are Moved to the Eternal Realm
Seasons last for about three months, and Seasonal characters are moved to the Eternal Realm when the season is over. They can still be played during the off-season so you players need not worry about losing the Seasonal character you have invested in!

What Carries Over From the Eternal Realm?
Renown and map progression, Altars of Lilith will carry over to the next season. However, Paragon Levels, skills, and other character progressions do not.
