This is a guide to Tempering, the reworked upgrade system for items in Diablo 4 (D4). Read on to know more about the Tempering System, how the Tempering System works, how to get Tempering Manuals, and how to get Tempering materials.
List of Contents
Tempering is a new feature that will be added to the game at the beginning of the game's fourth season. It will accompany the item system rework and allow players to have further customization options for their gear.

Whenever you choose a temper upgrade, you won't be able to specifically choose which affix you'll get from your chosen recipe. Instead, you'll be able to get an affix from the multiple affixes that's available from your recipe.

The Tempering feature will replace the old gear upgrade optoin and will be accessible from any blacksmiths in the game.
Tempering will cost the usual gold and some crafting materials such as Veiled Crystals, Forgotten Souls, and Iron Chunks so it's recommended to stock up on these materials by salvaging gear you find in while defeating enemies.
Each gear will have their own temper point and attempting a gear temper will consume a point from that specific gear. When a gear no longer has temper points, that gear will not be available for further tempering attempts making its final temper results unchangable.

When starting your tempering, take note as well that your first attempt to temper an item's slot will not consume a temper point. Since each gear will have two slots to use temper, this will mean that you at most, have 7 temper attempts per item.

While tempering, you'll be able to find a gear's tempering limit on the temper section on the gear itself. A single temper attempt will consume one tempering point from the item permanently. If the gear depletes its temper count, you won't be able to temper that gear again.
My Tempering button is greyed out. I don't know how to open it up, so I can get started . . . All of this information is useless until that button becomes functional.

I was expecting more information regarding the damage pools... Like what does it mean when a temper is embolden in white when it comes to a specific damage type or skill or attack speed? Are those separate damage pools, or are they general pools, which ones are multipliers and which are additive? This guide has zero important info.
