Close vs Distant
Close and Distant or Range are terminologies in Diablo 4 that describe enemies based on the player's perspective. Read on to learn more about these terms and which stat affix to choose from when making a build!

Close vs Distant Explained

Close Distance Are Enemies Near Melee Range

Close Enemies

Close Distant enemies are enemies that are in melee range or slightly near melee range of the player. For a semi-accurate range, this would roughly be the range of a Necromancer's Reap or slightly out of range of a Barbarian's Whirlwind.

Distant Enemies Are Enemies Outside Close Range

Distant Enemies

Distant enemies on the otherhand, are enemies that are not in close range so both affixes are the complete opposite of each other. Any distant related affixes would work on enemies that are in the distant rage as shown in the image.

Summoned Units Take Your Position for Calculations

When you have summoned units such as the Necromancer's skeletons, damage dealt to close distance enemies are measured by the character's distance to the enemy rather than the summoned unit. This means that if you want your summoned units to deal bonus damage using close distance affixes then you'll need to position yourself in melee range and vice versa.

Can be Added to Gear Via Tempering

As Season 4, several affixes has been removed from items that drops from enemies. To use these affixes, you'll need to use the tempering feature to add its affix via Natural Finesse from the Offense category into your chosen gear.

Which Affix to Choose?

Close for Melee Builds and Distant for Ranged Builds

Builds focusing on Melee attacks should prioritize the +X% Damage to Close Enemies, while a range-focused build should aim for +X% Damage to Distant Enemies.

Summoner Classes Should Consider Their Playstyle

While summoned units consider the summoner's position rather than the summoned unit itself, it may seem to be more beneficial to go for distant affixes. However, some summoner classes wants to go near melee range such as the Blood Surge Necromancer so consider how your summoner class plays and choose the affix that would fit your playstyle.
