The Infernal Horde is a roguelike endgame dungeon in Diablo 4 (D4). Read on to discover how to unlock and prepare for the Infernal Horde, including information on its rewards, how to enter, and the best boons to choose.
The Infernal Horde is a new roguelike, horde-based game mode in Season 5. In this mode, you select various buffs that come with negative effects, which can impact the battle as you confront multiple waves of enemies.
To access this dungeon, you need to use an Infernal Compass, which comes in different tiers. The tier of the compass determines the strength of the enemies, the rewards, and the number of waves you need to clear to finish the Infernal Horde. In this dungeon, the number of waves you need to clear is determined by the tier of your Infernal Compass. From Tier 4 onwards, each tier adds an additional wave, with a maximum of 10 waves at Tier 8.

You can unlock the Infernal Horde by completing the questline The Eyes of the Enemy at World Tier 3: Nightmare difficulty. To find and complete this quest, look for Locran and Istel in Zarbinzet within the Hawezar region.
Upon completing the quest, you will also be rewarded with a free Infernal Compass, the key needed to open the Infernal Horde.
The Eyes of the Enemy Location and Walkthrough
To enter the Infernal Horde, you need an item called the Infernal Compass. These compasses work like Nightmare Dungeon Sigils, allowing you to open a portal to start the dungeon.
You can obtain these compasses by completing Whisper Bounties, Nightmare Dungeons, The Pit, opening chests in Helltide or by crafting them at the Occultist.
You can use Abyssal Scrolls to upgrade the tier of your Infernal Compass for better rewards. However, this process is irreversible; once you raise the tier of an Infernal Compass, you cannot lower it.
How to Farm and Upgrade Infernal Compasses
In the Infernal Horde, defeating enemies rewards you with a currency called Burning Aether. At the end of the Infernal Horde, you can use this currency to open chests containing various rewards.
There are four different types of chests available, each offering specific items depending on what you wish to farm. However, the Spoils of Greater Equipment is only available on tier 3 or higher Infernal Hordes.
Chest | Burning Aether | Reward |
---|---|---|
Spoils of Greater Equipment (Tier 3 or Higher) |
60 | Random Equipment with Greater Affix |
Spoils of Equipment | 20 | Random Equipment |
Spoils of Materials | 20 | Random Materials |
Spoils of Gold | All Remaining Aether | Gold |
The Exalted Horde boon allows you to spawn Aether Events faster when killing mobs, ultimately allowing you to gather more Aether in each wave. This is exceptionally great when paired with other boons tied to the Hellborn or Spire.
The Summoned Hellborne is the best Aether Event in the Infernal Hordes because they grant the most Aether and they do not disappear when the wave timer runs out. The best upgrade for this boon is The Surging Hellborne which adds another Hellborne to the Aether Event and increases each Hellborn Aether drop by 1.
