When playing through the Main Story, we recommend Mega Evolving Charizard into Mega Charizard Y.

Mega Charizard Y is very similar to the regular Charizard due to its higher Special Attack stat, and same dual Fire and Flying-typing, making it extremely easy to use without having to make any additional changes or adjustments.

When participating in Ranked Battles, Mega Charizard X proves to be stronger due to its better Type coverage.

Mega Charizard receives normal damage from Fairy-type moves, and receives STAB on its Dragon Type moves, allowing you to dish out more damage using Physical Dragon moves such as Dragon Rush and Dragon Claw.

Different Types

Mega Charizard Y ImageMega Charizard Y

Mega Charizard Y retains the Fire and Flying types of the regular Charizard, while Mega Charizard X discards its Flying type in favor of a Dragon-typing.

Due to its dual-typing, Mega Charizard X removes its previous 4x weakness to Rock-type moves, and receives normal damage from Water, and Fairy moves instead. Mega Charizard X also resists Electric types, unlike the regular Charizard and Mega Charizard Y, but now receives 2x damage from Ground and Dragon-type moves.

Although Mega Charizard X has equal Attack and Special Attack stats, its high Defense along with STAB on moves like Outrage, Dragon Rush, and Dragon Claw make it a better physical attacker.

Mega Charizard Y, on the other hand, is more similar to its regular counterpart, having a higher Special Attack and Special Defense stat. Similar to a regular Charizard, Mega Charizard Y also enjoys STAB on its Fire and Flying moves, allowing it to deal high amounts of damage using moves like Air Slash, Flamethrower, and Fire Blast.
