EV Training Guide

Use Vitamins

Use Vitamins

One surefire way to increase a Pokemon's EVs is by giving them Vitamins. Specifically, each type of Vitamin gives 10 EVs corresponding to one of the six main stats.

List of Vitamins

Item Description
Zinc Icon
Zinc
A nutritious drink for Pokemon. This drink increases base points for a Pokemon's Sp. Def stat.
Protein Icon

HP Up Icon

Once you clear the game, you can purchase Vitamins at Pokemon Centers, and one Vitamin costs 5000.

If you want to allocate your Pokemon's EVs efficiently, then you will have to buy a total of 53 Vitamins for maximum EVs, which costs a total of 265,000.

Use Feathers

Use Feathers

While they are less effective than Vitamins, Feathers have the same type of effect as each type of Feather adds 1 EV to one of the six stats.

List of Feathers

Item Description
Swift Feather Icon
Swift Feather
An item to be used on a Pokemon. This feather slightly increases base points for a Pokemon's Speed stat.
Health Feather Icon

Since feathers only add 1 EV point to one of the six stats, you can use them to fine-tune or carefully adjust a Pokemon's EVs.

Battle With Other Pokemon

Battle Pokemon

Another way to increase your Pokemon's EVs is by battling other Pokemon. Each Pokemon specie provides an EV increase to one of the six stats upon defeat, so make sure you're fighting the right Pokemon to get the EV gains that you're looking for!

Training items guarantee that you will get the EVs that you want each time you defeat a Pokemon as you get 8 EVs in a single stat depending on which training item your Pokemon is holding.

However, you can only acquire these items after you finish Main Mission 38 and finish the story. In addition, these items reduce your Pokemon's speed, so try fighting weaker Pokemon while using these items instead.

Catch Alpha Pokemon

Catch Alpha Pokemon

Alpha Pokemon have their HP EVs maxed, so if you plan on using a Pokemon that should have max HP EVs, you can catch its Alpha variant instead.

Use Specific Berries

Players can opt to feed their Pokemon certain berries in order to lower the base points of a stat. There are 6 berries that can do this: Pomeg (HP) Kelpsy (Atk) Qualot (Def) Hondew (Sp. Atk) Grepa (Sp. Def) Tamato (Spd).

What are EVs?

Hidden Values That Increase Six Main Stats

Garchomp ImageGarchomp
Attack Speed
Has EVs 182 169
No EVs 150 134

Effort Values (EVs) are hidden values that correspond to each of the six main stats that a Pokemon has: HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed. Specifically, 4 EVs is equivalent to 1 stat point, and a Pokemon can only gain a maximum of 252 EVs per stat and a total of 508 EVs.

In the example above, Garchomp's stats are significantly higher due to EVs. Allocate your EVs based on what stats suit your Pokemon the best!

This was a thing in SV so it probably carried over.

I have two pokemon holding the same power item. One is doing the battle but it seems like both of them are getting the same amount of EVs. I wonder if I can just have an even stronger pokemon to do the battling while the other two just gain the EVs. Right now I am testing that out.
