One of the main goals of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, as the name implies, is to increase your character's rank from Z, which is the starting rank, all the way up to an A. And the way to accomplish this is by competing in Battle Zones and Promotion Matches in Z-A Royale.
Battles become tougher as your rank increases. So, reaching Rank A will be the ultimate proof that you are among the strongest. Reaching Rank A also completes the game's main storyline, allowing you to freely explore Lumiose City's post-game content.

Z-A Royale is not available during the day. The city's Battle Zones only open up at nighttime. These zones are indicated by red glowing gates where you'll find trainers to battle.

Victories against trainers you encounter in Battle Zones will earn you Ticket Points. Earn enough Ticket Points and you'll be rewarded with Challenger's Tickets, which are how you enter Promotion Matches.
You can earn more Ticket Points by fulfilling conditions in battle cards, which can be found in the Battle Zones.
Battle System: Will Battles Be Turn Based?
| Tickets Required | Rank |
|---|---|
| 1000 | Rank Z (Zach) |
| 3000 | Rank Y (Yvon) |
| 4000 | Rank X (Xavi) |
| 5000 | Rank W (Rintaro) |
| 6000 | Rank V (Vinnie) |
| 32000 | Rank F (Canari) |
| 35000 | Rank E (Ivor) |
| 38000 | Rank D (Corbeau) |
| 41000 | Rank C (Jacinthe) |
| 45000 | Rank B (Grisham) |
The amount of Ticket Points required grows exponentially. The stronger the opponent, the more Ticket Points you have to get!

Once you have earned a Challenger's Ticket, you can participate in a Promotion Match. Winning this match is how you rank up in the game. And enemies become tougher as your rank goes up.

In Battle Zones, you also gain Prize Medals in Battle Zones after winning a battle or after picking them up from the ground. When the night cycle ends and the Battle Zone deactivates, you gain the amount of Prize Medals that you earned x10 as Money.
Additionally, this amount will be multiplied based on the amount of trainers that you beat during that night cycle.
| Amount of Wins | Multiplier |
|---|---|
| 0-4 | x1 |
| 5-9 | x1.5 |
| 10-19 | x2 |
| 20-29 | x2.5 |
| 30+ | x3 |
The multipler increases by x.5 each time you reach a certain amount of wins in a Battle Zone, so if you want to earn more money, then defeat more trainers!
There are also a few trainers that reward you after you win a battle against them. For instance, Cafe Baristas give you coffee and heal up your Pokemon afterward, Lady Trainers give you additional Prize Medals, and Backpackers give you high value Card Missions.

After beating the game, you will unlock the Infinite Z-A Royale, and where you earn Challenger Tickets for Reward Matches instead. After each match, you will receive a random item as a reward.
The item you get from a Reward Matches is completely random, and some items are rarer and harder to get.

Before participating in the Z-A Royale at night, take the time during the day to prepare by training your Pokemon and stocking up on items.

There are two ways to start battles in the Battle Zone. You can either approach trainers until you are spotted, or you can sneak behind them for a surprise attack. The latter allows you to deal damage before the match even begins as an advantage. There's even a chance to instantly defeat the enemy with this attack.

Sneaking up on trainers won't always work out. As you approach them, bad positioning can cause an awareness meter on the top of the screen to start filling up. Once that meter becomes red and completely fills up, trainers will spot you and challenge you to a battle .

If you find yourself faced with an opponent that turned out to be stronger than you anticipated, remember that you can always run and flee from the battle.
Aside from winning battles, you can also collect battle cards in Battle Zones which give you different kinds of missions and reward you with points for completing them.
The type of missions include hitting opponents with supereffective moves, applying status conditions on your opponents' Pokemon, or even unleashing your Mega Pokemon in battle! Completing these missions while beating other trainers can help you earn points more efficiently.
Missions from battle cards count each hit of multi-hitting moves, so using moves such as Bullet Seed will help you complete these missions faster.

I read everything, but the question in the title remains unanswered. What does the term "promotional match" mean?
