Set nicknames by going to the Boxes menu in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Learn how to set nicknames and find out if you can nickname traded pokemon in this guide.
How to Set Nicknames
Open the Boxes Menu
First, open the menu and head to the Boxes. It should be the top option, just above the Satchel.
Choose a Pokemon to Nickname
Opening the Boxes lets you check all the Pokemon you have, including your party. Choose the Pokemon you want to nickname from the list.
Select Change Nickname
Finally, choose Change Name from the menu. This will allow you to change the nickname of the Pokémon you selected.
Can You Set Nicknames of Traded Pokemon?
Nicknames Can't Be Changed for Traded Pokemon
Nicknames of traded pokemon can’t be changed in Legends: Z-A. The only way to get a different nickname is to ask the host to rename the pokemon before trading, since the name will be locked once you receive it.

Quick question. If the host doesn't nickname the Pokemon before trading, does the Pokemon name change with its evolution? For example, if an unnamed Scyther is traded with a Metal Cloak and evolves into Scizor, will it still be called Scyther or will it automatically update to Scizor as it reflects the species name and not the non-existent nickname?
