Mega Camerupt has few defenses, and many resistances. However, the combination of Fire and Ground typing make it four times as weak to Water.
Type Chart and Team Matchup Checker
Gyarados
|
Moves: ・Crunch ・Waterfall ・Water Gun ・Whirlpool Where to Get: ・Evolves from Magikarp, found in Wild Zone 2 and Wild Zone 6. ・Wildzone 11 Gyarados is a strong offensive Pokemon that can be easily obtained in the early game. Its Crunch can be used to lower Mega Camerupt's Defenses. Waterfall can then be used to potentially cause Mega Camerupt to flinch, which maximizes Whirlpool's AoE in dealing continuous water damage. Water Gun has a shorter cooldown time, so it can be used to weave in between cooldowns of other attacks. |
Gyarados is highly recommended as a counter in this fight because of its advantage as both a Water and Flying Pokemon.
While Mega Camerupt is weak against Water, it has a Ground attack called Earth Power that can deal devastating damage to Water-type Pokemon. However, since Gyarados is a Flying-type, Earth Power does little to no damage, making it an effective counter against the Rogue Mega.
| Crunch → Waterfall → Whirlpool → Water Gun → Crunch |
Using Crunch lowers the Defense stats of Mega Camerupt. This should be followed up by Waterfall, which is the strongest Water move in this set. It also has a chance of causing Mega Camerupt to flinch.
After Waterfall, use Whirlpool to create an AoE that will deal continuous water damage to Mega Camerupt. While the other moves are under cooldown, use Water Gun to maintain your damage uptime until Crunch is ready to use again.
Slowbro
|
Moves: ・Amnesia ・Water Pulse ・Water Gun ・Surf Where to Get: ・Evolves from Slowpoke, found in Wild Zone 10 and Wild Zone 11. Slowbro is a bulky Pokemon that can deal heavy damage while tanking hits. We recommend equipping Amnesia to supplement its defenses, while using Water Pulse, Water Gun, and Surf to wear down Mega Camerupt. |
Another easy to bring Pokemon would be Slowbro, as players can obtain Slowbronite right before this fight. Slowbro is a bulky special attacker with good all-around stats.
This is the most accessible Pokemon to get right before Mega Camerupt, and gives you access to a suite of Water-type moves. Slowbro also resists fire, which adds to its defenses.
| Amnesia → Water Pulse → Water Gun → Surf → Water Pulse |
The optimal move rotation here would be to open up with Amnesia, before cycling between Water Pulse, Water Gun, and Surf. You can use Amnesia to replenish your defenses, but it is always better to prioritize dodging over stacking defenses.

|
| Mega Camerupt highlights an area on the ground, exploding after a brief delay. |
Players can strafe in any direction to avoid getting hit by this attack, or roll to get away at the last moment. You can predict where the attack will land by watching out for the glowing spots on the ground.
| Mega Camerupt charges at the player, and smashes its head into them. |
Players can roll backwards to avoid getting hit by this attack. However, This attack can make your Pokemon flinch, so you may also opt to draw Mega Camerupt towards yourself.
Players can easily recover health over time during fights, but Pokemon need items. Try to take hits from Mega Camerupt when it does its Headbutt to give your Pokemon more space to fight.
| Mega Camerupt charges, before raining explosive meteors around the stadium. |
After dodging the falling meteors, players will have to destroy the meteors in their immediate surroundings. If they linger, they will explode during the second part of this attack, damaging you and your Pokemon.
| This is the second part of the Meteor attack. Mega Camerupt charges again, this time detonating in an area around itself before detonating all meteors. |
Once you see Mega Camerupt charging, back away from it and any nearby meteors. Mega Camerupt will detonate first, with the meteors following shortly after.

The Camerupt Mega Battle can be encountered on the rooftop of a building in Jaune Sector 3 after you battle with the construction workers in Main Mission 12: A Rogue Mega Camerupt. Rogue Mega Pokemon are indicated by a glowing pink aura surrounding the Pokemon.

After defeating the Rogue Mega Camerupt, you will receive the Cameruptite Mega Stone as a reward. The Cameruptite allows you to Mega Evolve your own Camerupt in your team.
