During the Pokemon Presents livestream on February 27, the Mega Evolution Symbol briefly appeared at the end of the trailer, hinting at its return in the upcoming game.
Since it is a Legends Game based on the Kalos Region, we will likely see a Mega Evolution mechanic, likely based on how the mechanic was back in Pokemon X and Y.
Mega Evolutions Return in Pokemon Legends Z-A
The Pokemon discussed here are all Pokemon that were confirmed to be in the game through the February 27 Trailer for Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
All Confirmed Pokemon
Mega Evolution will likely work similarly to XY and ORAS, where a Pokemon will be holding a Mega Stone, and it's trainer activates it during battle.
In a Legends-style game, Mega Evolution might be a transformation that can be activated on the Battle screen, similar to Strong and Agile Style in Legends: Arceus.
It may be a transformation that lasts throughout the battle, however, and not simply for a few turns.
Because Pokemon did not have Held Items in Legends: Arceus, we can speculate that it may work similar to Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, wherein the Mega Stone need only be in the player's inventory to be activated.
Krookodile is a powerful Pokemon on its own, and can only get stronger with Mega Evolution.
Naturally having Intimidate and the ability to change Abilities on command make this a powerful candidate for getting a Mega Evolution.
Aegislash is another Pokemon that is strong by itself, being able to switch from offense and defense with its unique Stance Change Ability.
Mega Evolving Aegislash might lock it into a stance and give it an entirely new Ability.
Dragonite is a pseudo-legendary that did not get a Mega Evolution back in XY or ORAS. While it has powerful Abilities already in Inner Focus and Multiscale, having access to an entirely new Ability could
make this Pokemon an even bigger competitive threat.
Starters are most likely to get new forms, and in this case, Mega Evolutions. Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise all had Mega Evolutions, but Generation 2 Pokemon were completely skipped, as well as Generation 4.
It is a good assumption that Starters from these games, as well as starters from Generation 5 and onwards have a fair shot at getting Mega Evolutions.
Besides Starters, Pokemon that have no evolutions were given Mega Evolutions. This included Pokemon like Kangaskhan, Absol, Heracross, Mawile, and Aerodactyl.
Pokemon like Garchomp, Salamence, Metagross, and Tyranitar all got Mega Evolutions in XY and ORAS. It is safe to assume that other pseudo-legendaries like Dragonite can get Mega Evolutions as well.
Victreebel is a Pokemon that is frequently overshadowed by other Grass-types. Other Poison-types also outclass it with better stats and learnsets. A Mega Evolution would greatly benefit Victreebel and help it get more usage in competitive play.
Fire typing is a great offensive and defensive type in competitive play, however Pyroar hasn't always been in the forefront of the metagame, often seen in niche team compositions back in XY. A Mega Evolution could increase Pyroar's usage by a lot if it ever gets one in Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
Arbok is a Poison-type that never did get much usage. A Mega Evolution that boosts its Speed and offensive stats after it has entered the field and Intimidated could help it become a powerful threat to Fairy-types, making it so Arbok becomes a threat to beware of.
