Players will register Mega Evolutions of Pokemon in their Pokedex as long as they own both the Pokemon and its Mega Stone. Mega Stones can be obtained throughout the story, or bought in shops such as Quasartico Inc. and the Stone Emporium.

Mega Evolutions are a further evolved state unique to some Pokemon. When a Pokemon is holding a Mega Stone, it can transform during battle by pressing the right analog stick on the Joycon.

Mega Evolved Pokemon receive enormous stat buffs. When Mega Evolved, Pokemon receive at least a total of 100 stat points distributed among their six stats.
The only exceptions to this rule are Mega Starmie and Mega Medicham, whose bonus stat totals amount to 140, and Mega Mawile, who receives a total of 142 stat points.

Players unlock Mega Evolution after completing Main Mission 9: A Rogue Mega Absol. As you won't have access to Mega Evolutions in this fight, be sure to prepare a team equipped with Fighting, Bug, and Fairy Type Pokemon.
Rogue Mega Absol Strategy Guide

At the bottom right corner of the screen, you can find a meter filed with energy. Keeping Your Pokemon in a Mega Evolved State, will deplete this reserve of energy as do using Plus Moves.
If your Mega Evolved Pokemon finds itself in a bad matchup, you can switch it out to end the Mega Evolved state in favor of a better type matchup.

Mega Stones can be obtained through various means from progressing the story, to purchasing them at the Stone Emporium and Quasartico Inc.
Players can purchase Mega Stones at the Stone Emporium with money, while Mega Stones purchased at Quasartico Inc. require Mega Shards.

When Pokemon are in a Mega Evolved state, their moves are converted into plus moves which are more powerful versions of their base forms. Regular Pokemon also gain access to Plus Moves, consuming a bar of meter every time a Plus move is used.

I was hoping that they would make a mega evolution for Pikachu, Ninetales, Meowth, Lapras, Eevee, Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Espeon, Umbreon, Milotic, Luxray, Leafeon, Glaceon, Maractus, Zoroark, Sylveon, and Goodra! Because that would be awesome!
