Alpha Pokemon are larger and more aggressive versions of wild Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Read on for a list of Alpha Pokemon and their locations, as well as learn tips on how to catch them!

Makes it easier to catch Pokemon. Can be upgraded three times. ▶︎ Which Canari Plush Should You Get? |
|
Quick Ball ★★★★☆ |
Effective when used before the target has spotted you. |
|
Timer Ball ★★★☆☆ |
Effective during long battles where the target has taken more actions. |
Alpha Pokemon are a lot stronger than regular wild Pokemon as they have higher levels and have better EVs. They are harder to catch so it is recommended to bring Poke Balls that help with capture rates or get the Blue Canari Plush.
If the Alpha Pokemon that you are hunting for does not appear in an area, you can reroll the Pokemon that spawn in the area by fast travelling to the location.
For example, if you want a certain Alpha Pokemon to appear in Wild Zone 1, you can fast travel to the Wild Zone 1 waypoint to reroll the Pokemon in the area.
A Quick Ball is an effective Poke Ball to use against Alpha Pokemon that has not spotted you yet. This can be paired along with the backstrike bonus that increases you capture rate when you throw a Poke Ball onto your target's back.
This is useful as you can sneak around and position yourself behind an Alpha Pokemon and utilize both capture bonuses.

As you progress through the game, most Alpha Pokemon you encounter will typically be of higher level than you. To weaken them reliably, we recommend status moves that deal passive damage such as Poison, Burn, or Curse damage.
Inflicting these status conditions will guarantee that the target Alphas will have their HP lowered over time, during which you can continue capture attempts, provided they aren't enraged.
Do note that Poison and Steel-type Pokemon cannot be poisoned, so you can instead apply passive damage with Will-O-Wisp. Meanwhile, Curse's residual damage will only work if it is used by a Ghost-type Pokemon.

You can also use Perish Song against an Alpha as this guarantees that the target will faint after 30 seconds, although you will not be able to throw Poke Balls while waiting as the target will still have a lot of health.
You will also have only one chance of capturing it once it is Knocked Out from Perish Song's effect. It is recommended to use a Timer Ball as this will become more effective the more actions your target has done, and is useful against Pokemon that has a high Speed stat.
Perish Song Effect and Pokemon That Learn It

An Alpha Pokemon may become enraged if you throw a Poke Ball multiple times without successfully catching it. If an Alpha Pokemon is angry, Poke Balls will bounce off if you throw them and you will not be able to capture it until it calms down.
Any Poke Ball that has bounced away can be reclaimed from the Lost Poke Balls NPC found near Pokemon Centers.

The capture rate of Alpha Pokemon increases when you defeat them entirely, where they will be stunned for a few seconds.
When the Alpha is stunned after being Knocked Out, you get one last chance to throw your best Poke Ball, like an Ultra Ball, for a capture. With any luck, you'll catch your target. And if it fails, you can always load your previous save, or just wait for it to respawn.

Alpha Pokemon that you have caught are guaranteed to have 3 perfect IVs in random stats. These can give them a significant advantage over regular wild Pokemon as they will have higher stats.
Hyper Training Guide: How to Increase IVs

Alpha Pokemon are guaranteed to have max EVs in HP when caught, which makes them have more HP than regular wild Pokemon.
This is denoted by the sparkle around the stat with the graph reaching the far end of the diagram when viewed in the stats screen once the Judge function has been unlocked after completing the game.
Judge Function: How to Check IVs and EVs

Alpha Pokemon have moves it does not learn naturally upon level up but only learned via TMs. When attempting to replace the exclusive move without the respective TM in the Satchel, a warning will appear mentioning that it can no longer be relearned when deleted.

Alpha Pokemon are variants that are larger in size with red glowing eyes, marked with a red symbol next to their name in the HUD. They boast a higher HP stat and often have exclusive Moves, making them a difficult opponent to beat in combat.
Legends Z-A Pokedex: List of All Pokemon

Alpha Pokemon will start appearing on the overworld after completing Main Mission 5 and Side Mission 1.

Alpha Pokemon can appear as fixed spawns or spawn as a random Alpha in the wild.
Fixed Alpha Pokemon will appear in the same location if the time and weather conditions are met, while random Alpha Pokemon can spawn in place of a random wild Pokemon.

Getting 100% completion on a Wild Zone will likely allow random, non-fixed Alpha Pokemon to appear in that Wild Zone.
If an Alpha Pokemon does not spawn, you can fast travel to the Wild Zone to reset the spawn location of that area. In addition, fast traveling to the same Wild Zone will also be treated as a reset.
