Since Pokemon Legends: Z-A introduces real-time battles to the franchise, the Speed stat plays a unique part when it comes to strategy. Learn about what the Speed stat does and how it is different from previous Pokemon games.

What Does the Speed Stat Do?

Affects Move Cooldowns

Lv. 30 Pikachu
Speed Stat: 57		 Lv. 30 Pikachu
Speed Stat: 72

Unlike in previous Pokemon games, where the Speed stat determined which Pokemon went first in a turn-based battle, the Speed stat now affects cooldowns. Pokemon moves can now freely be used again after their cooldown, shown in how the diamonds in the lower right fill back up to their Move Type color. Pokemon with higher speed stats can use the same move again but faster.

Higher Speed Allows Pokemon to Attack More

Based on our testing, Pokemon with higher Speed stats can attack more frequently. Shown in the video above, both Pikachu are level 30 but the Pikachu with the higher speed stat on the right is able to use Thunderbolt faster after its last use.
